Xanax and Ativan
I was given Ativan for sleep three weeks ago and it's working fine--I do get quite sleepy during the day so I don't know how people take this when they're at work BUT my heart still starts pounding and I have difficulty getting a deep breath (which is the reason for the original Ativan) so I split a .25 Xanax in half and take that during the day. That's a very small amount but it doesn't make me as tired and evens out my heartbeat. Am I doing myself great harm by combining these two drugs in one 24 hour period? BTW, these heart poundings and shallow breaths have no real concrete reason.
The Xanax was from my Primary physician until I could get an appointment with a psychiatrist--several months in the making--because I was awakening with my heart pounding and it is assumed an anxiety attack. When I finally did see the psychiatrist he gave me the Ativan so I could sleep through the night which it has accomplished. Unfortunately, some of the heart pounding (btw, a heart issue has been ruled out) occurs once in awhile during the day.

You need to readdress your issues with your prescribing doctor and then follow his dosing directions to the letter!

I'm a bit confused. You stated you were given the Ativan for sleep, but then say it was originally given to you because your heart was pounding and you had difficulty getting a deep breath. So, which is it?
And where does the Xanax come into the picture? Was this prescribed by the same doctor?
Taking two benzos is really not a good idea no matter how small a dose of one or the other you're taking.
You're not doing yourself any "great" harm, but that is not the point.
See your doctor and get straight about your meds.
