I'm going to be a little contrary here-  Effexor is a very stimulating antidepressant, so when anxiety is the main problem it's not usually the recommended drug.  When depression is the major problem with anxiety secondary, then it can be helpful, but if it isn't helping it may be the stimulative effect.  Abilify is only approved as an adjunct medication for people with intractable depression that nothing else has worked for.  It might be that the ssris would be better for you if the Effexor doesn't help with the anxiety as they don't tend to be as stimulating, but it also takes time for these meds to work and they usually don't get rid of all our symptoms -- they were all invented as short-term mitigation in the hope that while they are helping we can work better in therapy to fix our problems, though that doesn't, obviously, always work.  Good luck.

Venlafaxine (Efexor) is used to treat anxiety - I have been on this medicine for 8 years and it works for me. Do remember though that it can take up to 4 weeks before you notice a positive change when starting up on Venlafaxine..
