I doubt you will have any trouble with your c-section, as you will be anesthetized from the neck down, and you will be excited to see your new baby! :-)  Don't worry.  Blessings to you and your new baby - Blu

This is the perfect question for me to try to help with.  I have had anxiety all my life, on and off of course.. I also have had two C-Sections.  The first one was a major emergency and I only flipped out when they said I was going to be put to sleep but the anesthesiologist one the fight and I got to stay awake.  I was very stable wtih my anxiety at that time though.

The 2nd time I was also pretty stable but it was scheduled so my anxiety had time to build up...  I did okay i got a little panicky when they put the spinal in but you most anesthesiologists are very kind and comforting.

Remember, they do these surgeries all the time.  If you get a little nervous just take slow deep breaths and think of something else.  I think you will be so excited about the baby you won't be too nervous, you will be fine!!!

A c-section is really not bad at all!  Afterwards, its painful but not horrendous.  I think everyone loves to tell horror stories!  You will be fine.

If you have any questions about C-Sections or anything, i'd be more than happy to help!

Best of Luck!!

Hello and welcome, and congrats on the baby!  Is this your first?

Do you have a history of anxiety?  Is there something specific you're worried about with the c-section, or just that you'll be very anxious at a very inconvenient time?

I would strongly recommend being very honest and open about this with your doctor, and the L&D team, including the anesthesiologist.  Explain to them that you're worried about having an anxiety issue during the surgery.

If there is something you're worried about (like complications, etc), then be sure to ask questions so you better know what to expect.  If this is your first c-section, sometimes just the unknown is enough to cause us anxiety.  If the doc or nurse better explains everything to you and gives you reassurance, that should make you feel better.

If you're just an anxious person and aren't specifically worried about the surgery, but rather just having an anxiety attack in that moment, then it will help if everyone is prepared, with medications to give you if necessary.

I know for ME, I would be worried about the same thing.  My panic disorder causes me to have a lot of anxiety in situations where I know I cannot just get up and walk away...that "trapped" feeling. Even sitting in the dentist chair makes me anxious (more than for the obvious reasons)...as I feel trapped.  If that's what you're dealing with...the medical team can note that in your chart and be prepared to offer you extra reassurance, and like I said, meds if needed.

I know when I was having my gallbladder out, I was more anxious in the pre-op holding area, because of that whole "trapped with no escape" hang up.  I was honest about it and the doc ordered a mild IV sedative for the pre-op area.  That helped a lot.  Distraction is another great way to combat that kind of fear.  If you have your partner with you, have him keep you busy with discussions about baby stuff, etc.  Even silly convos about work or whatever will help you take your mind off being anxious.

Lastly, the actual length of time in the OR for a c-section isn't that long at all...it averages about an hour.  That's start to finish usually.  Once the baby is delivered, I would bet all of your anxiety will be gone, as you will be too excited to be thinking about it anymore.  It will be the anticipation up to that point where you may be prone to feeling more anxious.  That's when your partner could be a great help in distracting you.

Very best to you...you'll do great!  We always work ourselves up...the actual situation we worry ourselves sick about usually almost NEVER turns out to be as bad as we imagined it would be.  Keep your eye on the prize...that beautiful new baby!!!

Update us when you can..iId love to hear how it works out for you and hear your experience.  Baby pictures would be nice too!  ;0)
