explain abbreviations + Citalopram question

I just joined. I have been reading many post about Citalopram and I see many abbreviations that I cannot figure out.
Can someone please let me know what the following mean? tx, sx, np, CBT

I was sick with H1N1 and then hospitalized with Pnemonia in late Oct/early Nov.
Pnemonia cleared up but I was still sleeping 20 hours a day and having hot flashes, tingling.
Did a slew of tests (chest x-ray, VQscan, blood work (CBC, Thyroid, sed rate, etc) all came back okay.
Doctor said I had anxiety and prescribed Citalopram 10 mg to start.
My energy started to come back the next morning and I started the Citalopram in the afternoon. After day 2 I was having Horrible feelings! I could handle the dry mouth, peeing every 20 mins and drinking tons, but the shakiness (caused my speech to stammer), feelings of craziness, pacing, rocking, thoughts of suicide. Called doc and she said Stop taking the meds. and try again on 1/2 dose (5 mg) in 2 days. Not taking that drug again!
After 66 hours (2.5 days) I was still vibrating, pacing, mind racing. House is much cleaner now!
I see the doc tomorrow about what to do next.
HOW LONG TILL THE CITALOPROM wears off?

Reading the past posts are saving my sanity right now!

Went to psychaitrist today. She was nice and easy to talk to. 1 big couch and 1 big chair to relax in. talked for 1 hour. Mentioned I do not want meds unless absolutly necessary. She understood. She does not do 'therapy' but someone else in the same practice does CBT and talk therapy, so I am going to see that doc tomorrow (Thursday). The doc I saw today even went trough the list of therapist and told the receptionist which ones were a better fit for me. How nice!

Thanks for the responses. It is so reasuring to know I have people to 'talk to' who have experience with anxiety issues.

I went to my primary doc. She gave me clonazepan .5 mg 2x a day as needed to use for up to a month until I could get in to see a psychiatrist. Clonazepan is to sedate me and allow me to get a good night rest. I am not sure I want to take it. Scared of side effects especially after having such bad reaction to Citalopram.

I am seing a psychiatrist for the first time on Wednesday. I hoping to learn how to handle or reduce my panic attacks and improve my mental state without meds.

Sx is a common abbreviation for "symptoms".

You need to discuss the issues you had with the med with your doc...to see what other options there may be for you.  Most of these meds cause pretty bothersome side effects initially (especially the jittery feeling you describe...very common), but the good news is, they start to subside after about a week and then eventually go away completely.  Some people end up requiring a short-term course of a benzo, like Ativan, or Xanax to help with the side effects.

Please also be sure to see your doctor....some of the symptoms you listed aren't very common side effects and may indicate a medical issue...always best to rule that out anyway.

Best of luck!

Hello there,

For the abbreviation question it's a bit tricky on two of em since i don't know in what context they were used but i can sure give you some answers there.

CBT means Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
TX means Medical Treatment or simply a treament
NP can mean Nurse Practitioner ( i believe it's the the correct answer considering we are on a health forum ) but it can also mean Nasal Prongs, used to deliver oxygen while in hospitals, Nucleoside phosphorylase, an enzyme or nucleoprotein. Just to give you the meaning regarding about health and biology since we are on a health forum.
SX could mean straight edge but i believe it was used following a medication name.

Citalopram have a half-life of 35 hours. It can be more since you had a bad reaction to the medication. After 3 days you should be fine since you didn't took the drug long enough to experience withdrawal symptoms. If symptoms persist i think it might be more related to your anxiety problem than the drug itself.

Please consider that I'm not a doctor and talk about all of this with you doctor.

Best regards,
M4
