If your operation allows it and you have a driver, take some benadryl to calm down, also you can try finding something soothing to do just before you leave, play your favorite game, take a long hot shower, and repeat to yourself over and over that everyone at the hospital made a profession out of helping people, and if your operation is minor, there is less than a 1% chance anything will go wrong, just take a deep breath and this ordeal will be over before you know it.

I work on a surgical unit at a hospital and trust me, we deal with people who are terrified every single day. You are not alone in your fear of hospitals or surgery.
I often have people ask me how I can be so brave to work there! It makes me laugh. We all have things that scare us. ME? I haven't a clue on Gods green earth how anybody can work in the snake house at the zoo!!!!

But, back to you. Speak with your doctor before your scheduled surgical procedure and make sure he/she understands how frightened you are. If they don't offer, then ask for something to help calm you down. They should have no problem giving you enough tablets of something like Ativan to get through this experience with your sanity intact.
You should take one the night before so you're well rested. When you get to the hospital (day surgery) it should now be in your chart that you're freaking out and they will give you something to calm you down. That's pretty standard protocol anyway. Just about everybody gets a bit nervous before surgery, and we aren't sadists, ya know! We don't actually enjoy watching people have anxiety.
Just talk to your doctor, OK?
You're going to be just fine. Also keep in mind that your surgery is being done in one of the most medically advanced countries in the world, not some hut along the Amazon! (No offense intended to the Amazonian Hut Hospital)
And.........on the off chance that you DO have some sort of major claustraphobic, panic driven meltdown, I promise you they will give you something to help. Just know that if you attempt to escape the confines and flee with your hospital gown flapping in the breeze and your bare butt out there for all the world to see.........they will, of course, shoot you with a tranquilzer gun, that bare butt being a perfect target.
I AM JUST JOKING, OK? NOBODY IS GOING TO SHOOT YOU.
Please post back and let us know how it all turned out, OK?
I wish you a speedy recovery
Peace

Well look at it this way, if the hospital was not there to make you better, how then would you feel?
Also add a little spirituality to your being. Put a higher being concept in your everyday life. What a grand thing is this we call life. Just imagine the human body. What or who could create such a machine!
I believe when a person is focused totally on themselves, it puts them at the center of the universe. But this is not so. There are other people who could draw from your wisdom and lifes experience. In your time at the hospital, talk to people, try to ease there pain. Let the light of peace shine through yours eyes. Make people laugh, and let them know that we all share this experience together.
