Citalopram is very good for anxiety and carries far fewer side effects than some of the other anti-d's but each person reacts differently to it, like any drug, so we can't say for sure how your body will respond, you may not have a single side effect from it and it may work well for you.  I think the main thing is to have a positive mind about taking it, if you are scared or have doubts about it then this can add to your already anxious mind and increase your anxiety while in the first stages of taking it, which will lead you to think its the Citalopram.  It may indeed raise your level of anxiety for a while, while your body adjusts to it but try to push through this and the most important thing is if you are not sure about anything your experiencing while on it contact your doctor and get reasurance from him/her, they know your medical history and whether your having a reaction to it.

Also anxiety can make you feel out of it, its something called 'depersonalisation' it is harmless but can feel terrifying and like your on drugs.  Plus it seems to pop up when you least expect it and make an already scary situation even worse.... the key is to breath through it, doing relaxation breathing techniques to control this will help.

I do know what your going through and yes anxiety can make you feel like your loosing your sanity but trust me all my doctors, therapists and even my shrink tells me no one with just anxiety will automatically develop a psychotic illness, its not how it works.

Oh yes, it can definitely cause a person to feel "out of it" or "unreal" that is a common symptom of anxiety. As to the tingling, yes, it can cause that as well plus the shortness of breath.. Actually, anxiety can cause all kinds of symptoms, it is no fun. I have had anxiety and panic attacks off and on since I was 23, I am now 52.

Have you discussed this with your doctor? It might be a good idea, then, they can also run some blood work on you to rule out anything organic that could be causing your trouble, such as hyper thyroid, blood sugar imbalance, and hormone instability. Believe it or not, certain food allergies can cause your exact symptoms. When you are really noticing them, try to remember what you ate, write it down, then, if you have another rather bad episode, write down what you have eaten and start comparing notes.

It can definately make you feel like you are going mad! I haven't had the tingling but I have had trouble breathing in certain situations. Are you getting any help? Meds? Counseling? I will be praying for you! Studchick
