What part of the barley plant? I haven't heard of any part being used for depression, but barley is a complicated plant, as they all are. The first shoots are wonderfully nutritious, full of minerals and antioxidants. It's called barley grass. A form of barley, jobs tears, is used in macrobiotic and Chinese medicine for cleansing. But I don't know of other research. Do you? If so, share it with us. What I do know is there are antidepressants most often used in natural medicine -- tryptophan, or 5htp, a metabolite of tryptophan, which is what the body uses to make serotonin. SAMe, a sulphur compound, also an energizer and antiinflammatory. And St. John's Wort, which nobody understands how it works but it does work and is used widely in Europe before strong meds are used. Hops, though a good relaxant, isn't an antidepressant per se. Obviously, an anxiety sufferer will be less depressed if he's less anxious. DLPA is a form of phenalalynine, a precursor of norepinephrine. You can take L-phenalalynine, but it can cause anxiety, so if you suffer from anxiety as well as depression this wouldn't be recommended. L-Tyrosine is another amino acid that produces norepinehprine in the body. Glycine is an amino acid precursor to Glutamate, as is glutamic acid; glutamate receptors are the latest area of study in the next wave of antidepressants. I'm sure there are more than these, but as for barley, barley grass is wonderful for energy and nutrition, and better nutrition and more energy will certainly help depression indirectly, but again, don't know anything about it being a direct antidepressant.
I am not really sure about barley either, but of course there are medications, behavorial techniques, and 'natural' supplements that are said to help. Just be careful when researching 'natural' remedies for depression. Quite often they are unregulated and can sometimes do more harm than good in my opinion, but some believe they produce results..anxiety affects us all in different ways, so a 'canned' approach to beating it is sometimes hard to do...keep us posted!
Im not sure about barley, But I do know Hops has been researched for Depression/anxiety
Talking about barley made me think of beer, lol so I thought of hops.
