obsessive thoughts without compulsions

Has anyone experienced this? I've had it for two years now a little over and it only happens when I get really stressed out which leads to anxiety which leads to depression then more racing obsessive thoughts. I mean I can have the same thought for sometimes hours sometimes days, its the worst feeling in the world because they are not pleasant thoughts and they make me feel guilty, crazy, sad, and suicidal. PLEASE help and opinions. I'm going to see my therapist thursday to see if I can get on anafranil. I'm hoping that it will help. THIS is my biggest problem and has always been since my anxiety and depression and mood swings started, it is for that very reason that I have obsessive disturbing thoughts. What shouuld I do?

Well, then I would say it's time to look for a new doctor for sure. If you have insurance, you could turn to them for recommendations, or your PCP.  You could also ask around, see if anyone you know could recommend someone.

I sure understand frustrating.  Of course it is.  Especially when you feel your doc either doesn't care, or isn't very "good", or both.

Start looking, hopefully you'll find someone who can get you to start seeing some positive improvements.  Let us know!!

No I don't have a negative attitude at all, it's just after 2 years of trial and error and having nothing work, it's a little bit frustrating. you know? I've been in therapy for probably a year and a half. I've been wanting to find a new Np i just don't really know of any in my area so its been difficult , and her work has been sloppy , it's almost like she doesn't know what shes doing. I am fed up with it, it can just be irritating at some points and also you get scared and upset, I'm sure everyone has been there. I work on things everyday for myself because at the end of the day they don't matter, I do. So I've put up with a lot and sat back and have done everything they have told me to do. Now i just have to demand the help that I want. And i ask questions on here because a lot of you on here are more helpful and smarter and calmer than doctors.

Well, if you feel that way, then it might be time to get a new doctor.  You have to understand that treating any illness, let alone a mental illness is largely guess work and trial and error.  It's not like there is only ONE specific way to approaching a medication based treatment. That's not to say that there aren't bad doctors out there, but what I'm saying is, it's easy to be critical when you're feeling lousy and just want someone to "fix" you.

Also, I get that the older meds can be very effective, and if that's what works for you, then fine, but there are a LOT of things to consider with that, including things YOU will have to change while on a med like that (ie strict dietary considerations).

You said you've tried therapy.  How long were you in therapy?  Did you put as much into it as you could, or did you sort of go into it with a negative attitude?  I'm not at all asking that to be mean, it's an honest question.  A lot of people don't find success with therapy because THEY don't do their part, or they go into it with a bunch of preconceived notions about it.  Therapy requires a lot of work, patience, and dilligence on the part of the patient.  I would suggest looking into it again.

And again, as for the doctor, you most certainly don't have to be "stuck" with the one you have.  Just make sure you're being fair when assessing what she has done for you thus far.  Also, you say she is "judgemental", why do you feel that way? I can tell you, after dealing with a lot of p-docs (both professionally and personally),  that out of all kinds of docs, they have to be one of the strangest bunches ever.  MOST of them have the lousiest bedside manner imagineable.  I quickly learned that their job was really only to manage my meds, not to give me that warm/fuzzy feeling I had expected.  That came from the therapist. Once I sort of brought my expectations down to a reasonable level, I didn't find myself disappointed as much as I was in the beginning of anxiety treatment.  Being realistic, however, is not the same as "settling", which you don't have to do.  Give it some thought, if you've been with her for a while, and you really feel you haven't seen much progress, then definitely seek out a new doctor.

My main concern with you is that all of your posts sort of have the same overall tone.  That you have become fed up with all of this, and you're just searching for ANY answer to fix this.  SO many people feel the same way.  Just don't let that frustration affect YOUR attitude towards treatment too much.  Meds and therapy are TOOLS we use, but the hard work has to come from US.  The harder you work at it, the better you'll feel.  If you're at the point of throwing your hands up in the air, it may be time to regroup, and see if you can regain some of that "will to fight" again.

Hang in there.  Please update us when you can.  We're here for you.

She actually said that she would put me on anafranil if the higher dose of Prozac didn't work. She said even though it's old it's one of the best. I've let her be the Dr. and all shes done is screw everything up more, actually the medications that I've read about and researched have helped me way more than anything that she has prescribed. Yeah I've tried CBT. DBT. . . She is very judgmental and has screwed up my medications seriously so many times It's not even funny. I was on depakote and told her how bad it was making me feel how i felt sick and was basically not able to function or talk and she wanted to up my dose. Even though I told her I became paranoid. Dr's are just starting to become jokes to me.

I 100% agree with everyone, obsessive thoughts, intrusive thoughts, all part of anxiety, and part of panic.  What in the world made you choose anafranil to ask your doc about?  There are SO many considerations and contraindications with that kind of med, I highly doubt the doc will go for it.

PLUS, don't get stuck in that rut of YOU recommending meds to your doc, courtesy of Dr. Google!  Let your doctor be the doctor, okay?  Just go in and explain what's goinig on, and let him come up with the ideas.  It's fine to ask about certain meds, but don't ask FOR a certain med.

What is your history with therapy?  Ever try CBT?  While meds can truly be life savers, it's the THERAPY that teaches you how to stop this kind of thinking. I strongly urge you to ask your doc for a referral for therapy, CBT if possible, if you aren't already receiving therapy.

Hang in there, we all know how it feels, we've all been there!

i completely agree easier said than done ive tried so many times to stop it, or re program my thoughts and it has just never seemed to work maybe its this age, i really don't know, but it makes anxiety and depression 8947439474573 times worse because then i just start really feeling like im crazy, and i punish myself for having bad thoughts

Obsessive thinking is always a part of anxiety -- what is anxiety but obsessive thinking?  We all have it.  Same with depression.  OCD is different, it involves obsessive actions that, if not performed, leave a person very anxious.  If you can cure the obsessive thinking, you can cure anxiety and depression, but easier said than done.

I guess I was going to ask her about that one because I've just read really good reviews about it . But maybe when I go in today shell suggest something different. I feel like its mostly a form of ocd but could be my bipolar or anxiety or everything

It seems to feed off of fear because the more I fear the thought the more it keeps coming. How long did it take u to get over it? I take lamictal prozac and klonopin but none seem to help with the obsessive thoughts :/ I just hate them so much!!!

I agree, that you are NOT alone. I have those thoughts too that make you feel so bad and horrible but I do not have the complussion side. Maybe a little in the things I do but not like the thoughts. I take Zoloft which helps with mine alot. I also have xanax for the anxiety.

It is very scary but it will pass, stay close with your therapist, tell them your concern and also ask about meds to get you over this hump. You will get over it.

I experience this type of thinking usually after I give birth, its part of postpartum depression aka postpartum anxiety, OCD, or panic, OCD can have classic symptoms such as compulsive thoughts followed by complusive behavior, but it can also just be the thinking...it manifests itself in many ways. I understand its a nightmare, I had thoughts that was about to lose control of myself and hurt my baby or myself and I would then freak out and have a panic attack, they're intrusive thoughts that aren't necessarily what you want but its just a chemical imbalance. Why are you going to ask for anafranil? Thats a very old drug , I m sure they have better meds now for OCD/depression/anxiety.  had a little bp as well so my cocktail was lithium, klonopin, depakote, atarax , since I couldn't take an anitdepressant.. There are lots of anxiety forums where you can chat, that use to help me as well. Good luck! Itll get better
