Opiate withdrawals for sure cause a significant amount of anxiety....even panic attacks.  It certainly sounds as though that's what is going on.  It never hurts to have a once over by your doc to rule out any physical/medical cause for your symptoms.  Is your discontinuing the Oxycontin something you are doing under a physician's care and guidance?  Did you do a taper or cold turkey?  There are medications a doctor can prescribe that can help lessen the severity of w/d symptoms, including the relating anxiety.  That would be a good place to start.  And, you're justified to be cautious with a med like Xanax...if you have a history of addiction, then you are more vulnerable to end up with a problem with the Xanax.  A med like Xanax can be very helpful as a short-term course to help you through the worst of the w/d related anxiety...but you would have to be closely monitored by your doctor to make sure that you don't start having an issue abusing the med.

If you haven't already...there is a GREAT Addiction forum here ("Addiction:Substance Abuse") that can offer you a lot of support and guidance, not to mention tips on things you can do to help ease the pain of w/d's...for one, there is the "Thomas Method" which incorporates natural supplements to help the symptoms.  Also, if you are having problems with restless legs, it is recommended to take frequent hot baths.  Basically there is a lot of help on that forum.  If you haven't, please check it out!

Let us know how you're doing...hang in there. Best of luck!

Hello there

First off to help you try to calm down try this following exercise. Ok, place your hand on your stomach and  take a deep slow breath in through your nose, fill your lungs, make sure your hand on your stomach rises and falls as this says your breathing from ur diaphram and not just higher up in your chest, then breath out to the count to 4 through your mouth.  Now while doing this repeat calming verses over in your mind like 'this is just anxiety, it can not hurt me, i am safe and sound, it will pass'.  If it helps write down calming words like Peace, tranquil, harmony, safe, secure and everytime you feel a surge of anxiety rising just take a look at the words and begin the breathing exercise.  It does help to write the words big and bold to make an impact when you look at them.

Now, i'd just like to ask have you withdrawn slowly, tappering off or have you just stopped cold turkey?  Going cold turkey is by far not the best method and is amost certain in every case to cause unwanted suffering and distress.  Also who decided to stop the drug, was it your doctor?

Let me know and practice the breathing exercise, it will help.

Me too. But I figured in life we ALL must have some crap to deal with. Im greatful I have a managable disorder. I know people who struggle with their disease or disorders everyday. I mean I do too, but not to their extent. I want it to go away too, but I look it this way: It goes away for the night (eventually!) and thats good enough for me :-) we will both be ok. Some days are better than others and I try not to overstress myself over stuff I cannot change. I have a little ritual with music, or a computer game or whatever to distract myself. Im still feeling chest discomfort right now, but Im not jittery and stuff at the moment. Have you calmed down any?

IT PROBABLY IS.. I WAS SO SURE SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH ME BUT I AGREE IF SOMETHING WAS REALLY WRONG THEN I WOULDNT STILL BE HERE TALKING ONLINE.

I am the exact same as to why I dont want to pick up my xanax prescription because I dont want to become dependent either.  But yeah I could feel my heartbeat in my hands and my heart was pumping.  Its just hard to believe ur heart can go like that.

Well honestly, if it was anything more serious I dont think you would be talking to me. I think it may be a combination of lack of sleep, withdrawls, the thought of being alone, and anxiety that has you so antsy. See I can only go off my own personal experiences. I woke up last month to my heart racing and OMG I felt like I was a goner. My tests came out normal and I was diagnosed with anxiety. I have xanax but I dont want to become TOO dependant on it so I use it sparingly. But the racing heart thing is something I go through. I just calm myself and drink water and WOOOSAH until Im back to normal. But Im up every night till about 3 or 4am because I cant seem to get chill until Im just dead tired. But yeah....that heart racing thing is scary, especially when your alone. Im sorry :-(

Im really sorry your having a rough night. It seems like your having a panic attack. But if your in doubt and feel that this is a bit abnormal please call 911. Im up every night for symptoms that Im afraid are heart related and Im learning to just calm myself and get to sleep. Ive had recent tests done to check for blood clots and such so I know its not my heart but at the same time Im afraid it is. Calm down and take deep breaths. Start doing something to get your mind off the physical symptoms your feeling. But like I said, if you really feel like this isnt a "normal" panicky feeling, dial 911 to be safe. Im not a doctor so I cant tell you whats going on. But distracting myself works for me at times :-)
