tips on dealling with panic attacks?

hi im 21 and get teriffying panic attacks only in public places, particularly when i que at the social welfare office , sometimes i would be there for 20-30 mins in a crowded room and the attacks come in waves , i get a sence that im about to collapse right on the spot and the thought of doing this in a crowded room only intensifies the attack, its the same sensation like when you stand up to fast and feel like your about to black out only its constantly  hapening, the worst part is they have become routine so no matter how much i try to take my mind off it i know that it will happen, i dont leave my house much anymore because i can always expect them, i know im not affraid of being in public, but something beyond my physical control tells me to panic and no matter how much i try not to think about it it still hits me hard, any advise would be helpfull tnx.

Yes, I've been in counseling for it.  It's not anywhere near as bad as it used to be, and I'm thinking of going the cognitive behavioral route.  But I also think cutting caffeine and sugar will help a whole lot.

In my experience with anxiety, there are many ways in dealing with it that can work for you, but have you ever been to counseling for it?  For me, attaining long term relief from panic was done through attaining the knowledge about it and why I was thinking the way I was.  There many avenues to take in my opinion.  For me, both single and group counseling helped tremendously.  Sometimes, all it takes is to realize how many people go through this and how many people succeed in dealing with it.  Counseling also gives you knowledge to deal with it, and knowledge is a very powerful tool in dealing with this.  It also sheds light on a very dark subject, which can take away some of the fear with it....we tend to fear what we don't know in my opinion.

You can and will get through this....it is hard, but focus on the long term and not the short term in my opinion.  We tend to sometimes beat ourselves up if we have a bad day with anxiety....realize everyone has bad days with any experience and dust yourself off and keep moving forward.  I definitely know it is SO much easier said than done, but just seeing the progress of members here is very inspiring...keep us posted!

Oh, if I am in a place where I can pull over, I don't ever have any anxiety.  (Since I know I can pull over.  LOL)  It's bridges that are long and go rather fast and don't have a shoulder that are my problem.  I live in a town that has at least 9 bridges, so have plenty of chances.  (Once I was going about 35 mph on a bridge posted 45, and a guy drove on my tail in a big truck, and leaned on his horn the whole way across.  Needless to say, this did not increase my comfort level.)  One of the bridges that I can actually use is now closed for over a year for repairs, so I have to do something.  I'll try the distraction and the ice and the a/c, and see how it goes.  (I already know that saying "You're doing fine" aloud to myself doesn't change anything.)  It's pretty serious to me because now I often drive with my toddler along, and I don't want to be limited in this way.

The instant ice packs with the window down, or the air conditioner on works. Also, you can do the distraction thinking because your just thinking about odd things, not anything specifically that would mess up your ability to drive. If possible even when trying stuff on list, I recommend you pull over safely, to let the calming down hit before you continue on the road.

This is a really great list.  I wonder how well it works when driving?

Hello, I think this will help you a lot. Feel free to message me if you need to talk :-)

Ok, there are pre panic tips and full panic tips.

Let's start with the pre panic tips.

A rubber band around the wrist can help if you use it before the anxiety turns into an anxiety attack. As soon as you start to feel weird you snap the rubber band onto your wrist. For some people, this can "snap" (pun intended) them out of going into the anxiety or panic attack.

When you start to feel the anxiety coming on, think of the most odd thoughts you possibly can. Wonder what a star would look like if it were really a circle in disquise.......how many cattapilars would it take to reach from the earth to saturn if they were drinking caffine. Distracting your thoughts with such bizaare thinking will redirect your mind from getting worse.

Sit down on a bench or chair, put your head between your legs, and force yourself to breathe in deeply, and breathe out deeply. It's when the breathing gets to short and quick that the panic gets worse. At first you might feel like you  can't do it, but with practice, you can.

If you wear correctional glasses, take them off. For some reason sight plays into some peoples anxiety problems.

Ok, now for when you are in an actual panic attack.

Cold water on the face, forehead, neck, and wrists can help calm the anxiety or panic down. If it's cold enough, it's kind of like shocking you out of the attack.

To add to the cold water technique, if you are in full blown panic attack, find ice as soon as you can, put it into some kind of rag or cloth, wet it, and rub it all over your head, face, neck, and behind your ears. Again, the cold shocks the mind out of the anxiety.

Here are some tips to prevent the anxiety and or panic attacks.

Stay away from caffine, as a rule, it is the MAIN reason people suffer from anxiety disorder and panic disorder.

Surround yourself with comedy whenever you start to feel off. Laughter is another technique that can fool the brain into concentrating somewhere else.

Keep a herbal tea you made handy when you are out and about. If you want, as long as you make sure it is safe for you, I will send you some "calm down" recipies that are 100% natural and legal.

Also, there are disposable instant cold packs you can buy from 99 cent stores to use for the cold, this makes it easy to find relief when driving, at work, or some other place a sink is not always available.
