8mg is a large dose of xanax. Do not try to come off of this on your own. You risk serious withdrawal symptoms - including the very real possibility of seizures. A psychiatrist is best suited to help you. You will have to come off very slowly (over the course of months), and you should probably be covered with an anti-seizure medication toward the end.

xanax worked very well for me and my anxiety! I would take a 10 mg. and within 30 minutes I would feel calmer and more in control. It also helped me sleep at night. I never had any side effects from it.

Try benzowithdrawal.com or another support site. They have very good information on how to withdraw properly and give you a better chance of success.

It can be done! Many have done it! You can too!

You need a psychiatrist to help you do this.  You can't go off it suddenly, you have to taper slowly or it can be dangerous.  Make sure the psychiatrist understand this, and do some research on tapering before you do this.  But do it -- and don't abuse prescription drugs again, they can be worse than illegal ones.
