lightheadedness/brain shakes

I have MCTD and have had numerous symptoms over the years such as twitches, shortness of breath, etc.I have another one that is perpexing. It is a weird feeling in my head.It is kinda like a lightheaded feeling with a brain shake at the end.It only lasts for about 5 seconds. It seems to happen when turning my head sideways or up and down. The strange thing is that it never happens when I go for a walk which is 3-4 times/day or when I mow the lawn, golf etc.It does not make sense.I have had it previously back in 2008' but it went away.I am getting desparate and would appreciate any ones comments on what this could be.Is it the MCTD rearing it's ugly head or what?

Dr.

I had a neck x-ray which showed bone spurs, arthritis, and a pinched nerve and a closing between the 6th and 7th vertebrae. My doctor is telling me that this is the cause of my lightheadedness and showed me some neck exercises.Does this make sense?I also had a EKG which was normal.

Hi!
There are many causes of dizziness, lightheadedness, passing out, blackouts etc. It is difficult to comment without examination. I am just enumerating the possible causes. You can discuss this with your doctor and get yourself examined. Dizziness could be due to postural hypotension (blood pressure falling with change of position), internal ear problems and cervical spondylitis or compression of cervical spinal nerves. All these cause dizziness when you get up from lying down position or when you change position that results in a change in the level of your head. Cervical spondylitis and ear problems also cause dizziness on changing the position of the neck.
If ear is the cause of vertigo (rotator movement of self or environment) then it could be due to benign positional vertigo, Meniere's disease, vestibular neuronitis and labyrinthitis. Other causes of dizziness are otitis media, trauma, side effects of drugs, TMJ, and fluid in ear. All these causes will have to be ruled out one by one by your ENT through specialized test. If it is blocked Eustachian tube, then doing a valsalva maneuver (Done by taking a deep breath and blowing while pinching your nostrils and closing your mouth) will help. This will help clear the secretions in the tube that connects the back of your throat with your ear.
For cervical spondylosis you will need X-ray and MRI of the neck. Blood pressure monitoring, tilt table test, EKG, heart echo, ambulatory blood pressure recording are all required for diagnosis of postural hypotension. Do discuss this with your doctor and get yourself examined. Take care!
