Excruciating knee pain at night

I am a healthy 44 yo female.  I am not overweight, don't smoke, rarely drink.  During the night and when I first wake up, I am experiencing excruciating bilateral knee pain.  I noticed the pain about 4 months ago and it is worsening.  I know it sounds crazy but I have to pull myself up, using the wall and toilet with my arms, to get up from the toilet when I get up to urinate in the night.  As the day progresses, the pain is still there but not as intense as during the night.  My knees are also swollen at all times, L>R.  I walk for exercise.  I am no longer able to squat down due to the pain and swelling.  If I did squat down, I would not be able to get up.  I take glucosomine chondrotine daily.  I had my right knee scoped 3 years ago and my left knee scoped 8 months ago.  I had an arthritis panel taken last month.  The doctor said nothing to worry about, RA was negative but the ANA was positive. I take Exforge for HBP.  I take Vicodin for the pain but does not work and Mobic does not seem to work either. Any ideas?

Thanks Totie.
I went to an internal medicine doctor the other day.  He thinks I may have a inflamatory disease problem and when it flairs up it affects my knees.  He wants me to change my diet and eliminate gluten and some other things.  Hopefully, this will work, if not, back to surgery to have it scoped out again.

It sounds like they may need to scope out the knee anyway. My neice had the same problem, negative MRI, but the ortho still went in and scoped it, it turned out she had a lot of scar tissue causing the pain.

Thanks for responding.  I have a orthopedic and he is does not know what is wrong. He drained my left knee about 2 months ago.  Also the MRI is negative for any ligament or tendon injury.  I am seeing an internal medicine doctor today.

It sounds like you may need to see an orthopedic to maybe take a MRI.
