I had microcalcifications (bilateral and scattered) that were "watched" on every 6 month mammograms for over a year. On the most recent mammogram, an increased cluster was seen on the right breast. The radiologist recommended a stereotactic needle biopsy. This came back as ADH (atypical ductal hyperplasia). An excisional biopsy (lumpectomy) was then recommended. This was done by a breast surgeon. The pathology result came back as borderline ADH/DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ). For me, it was important to remove this abnormal tissue before it had a chance to develop into invasive cancer. You definitely want to stay on top of the 6 month follow-up mammogram. If you do not feel comfortable with this and want to be more aggressive, you could request a biopsy. To put your mind at ease though, according to my research, most biopsies do come back negative.
The details of your examinations would be in the actual reports that were sent to your prescribing Physician so you might ck. with that office for a copy. Microcalcifications are an indication that some abnormality is present within the breast tissue ... NOT necessarily something malignant. I think the 6 month re-check is a proper recommendation since the findings did show cysts. If something is truly "highly suspicious" then a biopsy is usually recommended so this may have been an overuse of the term "highly suspicious". If I were you I would contact your Dr.s office and request that he/she sit down with you and discuss the reports in detail. I don't see a need for a second opinion as that would merely be having your films read by another Radiologist. Regards ....
