How does a radiologist decide whether to watch microcalcifications or to biopsy them?

Hi again,
You could call the institution where you had your mammography and ask about the BIRADS score.
When a biopsy is recommended it's usually done to further investigate these calcification, but it doesn't mean that the finding will necessarily be malignant.
Keep in mind that many biopsies done on suspicious clustered calcification return a benign finding.
You could talk to your radiologist to find out if you can delay the biopsy since she knows what your BIRADS score is and what's best for you.
A biopsy is a simple procedure that won't take too much time out of your busy schedule.Your health it's what's important right now.
In my opinion I think it's better to have it done the sooner the better for your own peace of mind.
I hope that your biopsy results will be favorable and I wish you and your mom all the best.

I was called back for a second mammogram and the radiologist reccommended a biopsy.  When I asked how soon I needed to schedule it, she said "in the next couple of weeks or so."  I didn't really know what else to ask so I don't know what the BIRADS category is.  Based on what you're saying, the number is probably a 4 or 5 and would indicate a malignancy.  Is that correct?  I know I won't know until this is tested, but my mother is almost 90 and has multiple health issues.  She just had a retinal artery occlusion and lost sight in her right eye.  I am her primary caregiver and have a pretty busy schedule right now.  I am 63 with a previous histroy of uterine/endometrial cancer 11 years ago.  I would like to wait maybe six months and see if there are changes at that time.  Do you think this would be wise or too risky?  Thanks for you input.

Your mammogram report includes a section showing a "Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System" (BIRADS) score. This indicates the radiologist's opinion of the absence or likelihood of breast cancer.
Based on the pattern of calcification on mammogram, the radiologist can give us the idea of whether the calcification is most likely benign or malignant. If biopsy is recommended it indicates on the report that the BIRADS category is 4 or higher, then there is a probability of malignancy.
If the BIRADS score is 3,the calcification have a high probability of being benign (>98%) and  a six-month short interval follow-up is the normal procedure.
Best wishes...
