Is MRI normal after clear biopsy

Hi guys I'm a bit confused if anyone can help? Im 31 found a lump left breast & had an ultrasound followed by a mammogram, the results came back extremely dense breast on left breast where I felt the lump so I had a core biopsy of the site. I was brought in for results which i was told where clear yet they do not know exactly what the lump is - sclerosis adenosis was mentioned as a possibility but they said they want to do an MRI for "problem solving"? It seems like a lot to go through if a biopsy was all clear & the lump will probably be left alone if sclerosis adenosis so now it makes me think something more has shown up? Im concerned about the contrast dye being injected into my system if its not really nessecary in first place for mri. So is it normal to have an MRI after a clear biopsy? Thanks for any help to put my mind at ease!

So I went back for my MRI today, the hospital rang me during the week telling me the doctor had requested extra spot mammogram pictures also for today. Unfortunately I couldn't get the MRI done as I was not in the right time of my cycle which they never mentioned before - you have to be between day 6 & 19 I think they said due to hormone levels. I did have the extra spot mamo pictures which they said where fine so just the MRI to do & hopefully get some more info on what the lump is..

You're more than welcome ..... please return and post after your test (if you decide to go ahead with it) or contact me by private message if you wish as I'm interested in what you find out from the MRI. Take care now ....

Thank for your reply as I wasnt sure if it was normal to have an mri after a negative biopsy, I want to know what the lump in my breast is & would have any test needed but I felt they weren't telling me everything as far as if it could still be cancer as I read biopsy is the only way to tell if it is cancer. My concern with MRI contrast is not comfort more that the dye is supposed to be toxic to body & flush through kidneys, I had bad kidney reflux as a child & was worried the dye could have some effects. But as you mention it's worse not to know, they did tell me however if adenosis that the lump would be left as is & that I would not need to come back for reviews... Thanks again for your help : )

Although the biopsy was negative for cancer it did not determine the true nature of the lump. An MRI isn't out of the question when a diagnosis is desired and this seems to be the case here. The contrast isn't a big deal .... and really nothing to be concerned about. I would say that positioning for a Breast MRI isn't what you would call comfortable BUT in light of having an undiagnosed lump in your breast it seems a minor inconvenience to me. MRI is used quite often when a definite conclusion can't be reached by the other methods used for diagnosis. The decision of course is yours and yours alone but I doubt many women would be confortable having an undiagnosed breast lump and do nothing about it. Take your time and seek a second opinion even .... Kindest regards ....
