Third lump in two months

Hi,

I think I need advice or reassurance- or both! My mother is an 8 year breast cancer survivor (mucinous, a rare form) so I've been very good about doing self exams. This October I found my first lump (lower right breast) and got a sonogram and mammogram done, resulting in biopsy and diagnosis of fibroadenoma. In early November, I found a lumpy area in my left breast (nipple area) and they thought I should have that checked out too. The doc did a sonogram on that area, then the other breast to see if they looked the same- they did and she said I now have fibrocystic breasts.

Well, yesterday I noticed a third lump- a painful one, oblong in shape- in my right breast off to the side. I'm about a week away from my period starting. I REALLY don't want to go in for a third dr.'s appointment so I'm wondering: do you think the sonograms would have caught it if something was there? The mammogram looked at both breasts but was useless, according to the radiologist, because I'm young and the tissue is dense. I don't know if the sonograms looked at that specific area, but they certainly looked around it. The first time, the doc made me go back for sonogram #2 because she thought she saw something in the right armpit area, which she ended up thinking was a shadow.

Anyway, this experience is making me pretty paranoid. Would you go back for appt. #3 or just assume it's another case of the lumpies?

Thanks!

if uv got fibrocytic breast disease/change -which it sounds like with three lumps, then u will develop lumps and bumpy areas. the classic sign is if they are painful. so im sure thats what it is. but have it checkd out if ur worried and because of ur family history its important. as u kno b cancer isnt usually painful and would usually be one mass that gets bigger, and is firm and not moveable.

Thanks for your thoughts, ladies. I'm currently thinking I'll wait until after my period to see if it goes away. I can feel a similar lumpy area on the opposite side, but only the right side hurts. So perhaps I'll wait and call my doctor if it doesn't subside after my period.

I'm rather surprised by your responses, though. The last sonogram on that breast was only 2-3 weeks ago and found nothing. Could something cancerous pop up within that time?

I WOULD FOLLOW UP ON IT TOO ESPECIALLY SINCE YOU ARE ANXIOUS, BUT I DO THINK THIS IS NOT CANCER FROM EVERYTHING YOU HAVE TOLD US. SO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT MORE TO BE SURE IT'S NOT AND SO YOU CAN STOP WORRYING. I THINK THEY ARE SO CAREFUL BECAUSE OF YOUR MOTHER'S HISTORY AND BECAUSE THEY WANT TO BE SURE BUT I AM ALMOST CERTAIN THIS IS PART OF WHAT THEY DIAGNOSED YOU WITH, FIBROCYSTIC BREAST DISEASE AND YOU MAY ALSO WAIT UNTIL AFTER YOUR PERIOD BECAUSE IF IT GOES AWAY AND GETS BETTER YOU KNOW IT'S OK. ALSO TRY TAKING VIT. E OR EVENING PRIMROSE OIL. I DON'T REALLY BELIEVE MUCH IN THAT STUFF BUT EVEN WITHOUT STRONG BELIEFS IT REALLY HELPED ME SO MUCH WHEN I DID USE IT. BEST, KAT

No question, I would go back to have this latest lump investigated to some conclusion. It certainly could be another Fibroadenoma but you need to know this and going thru the routine is the only way. Fibrocystic Breast Condition affects nearly half of all women so your situation is all too common. NEVER, I repeat, NEVER assume that a lump is "just another Fibroadenoma" ... always have it ck.d out.  Regards ..
