Tired of all the test!

I am 30 years old, I have been having sharp pain in my left breast for about a year now.  I had a excisional biopsy done in Feb 2008 and that mass showed that it was fibroadenoma.  The dr. said that should take care of the pain.  A month or so later, the pain came back, just as strong as before.  So I went back to the doctor and he put me on antibiotics.  Well those didn't work. OTC pain meds are not getting the pain to ease up, narcotic pain meds are not getting it to ease up and non narcotic pain meds only dull it for the amount of time they last.  I've done the cut back on caffine, tried warm compress, which made things worse, I had a skin biopsy done last week because the warm compress caused me to have 4 dime sized red marks on my breast plus made the breast feel like it was on fire from the inside out.  The doctors are not sure what to think at this point, which has me worried.  Any suggestions?

Hi,

Glad the posts were of help to you.

You should continue with the pain relief medications and discuss with  the breast surgeon about the further management of the hematoma.

You should also see a skin specialist for your eczema and wear lose clothes.

You should carry out regular breast self examinations and report any abnormal features to your doctor.

Let us know about how the appointment goes and about what the specialist advises.

Regards.

I go see the doctor on Monday as to what he wants to do about the hematoma, my results from the ultrasound came from the radiologist because the tech talked to her before I left.  Before he even knew that it was hematoma, he perscribed me Tramadol for my pain.  It seems to be working as far as easing the pain.  I know that I can't put heat on it because the heat will flare up my eczama, at least that is what happened the last time I put heat on it.  Thank you for all your help!

The ultrasound today showed that I have hematoma from my biopsy that was done in February 2008.  They are pretty sure that is the cause of all the pain that I am having since it is in the same area that I am having pain.  Thanks for checking up on me.

Hi,

You could change back to your original medications or stop them in consultation with your doctor and see if your symptoms resolve.

It is good to know that the lesion is eczema and has come out to be benign.

Let us know about how you are doing and if you have any other doubts.

Post us about the reports when they come in.

Regards.

I am going for an ultrasound Tuesday of this next week.  The general surgeon in my area that has been taking care of me is not listed as a breast specialist, but that is his specialty.

The skin biopsy showed that what they biopsied was benign.  The doctor said it was just eczema.

Have you heard that antidepressants can cause breast pain.  I read that somewhere on the internet and my doctor said that if the ultrasound doesn't show anything then that is probably what the problem is.  Another doctor changed my perscription of antidepressants from Zoloft to Cymbalta a month before I started having the pain.

Hi,

Yes, it would be best to consult a breast specialist and get a proper clinical evaluation and to rule out all the possible causes of your symptoms.

Let us know about the reports when they come in and also update us on how your appointments go.

Keep us posted.

Thank you for all of your help.  When I go to see my OB/GYN and general surgeon this week, I will discuss with them about being refered to a breast specialist.  It isn't the travel or missing work that I am worried about with the closest specialist being 2 hours away.  I just want to get some answers as to why I am in pain.  I don't really care how far I have to go.  I also will ask them about getting a chest x-ray and ECG done.  I will post when I find out more.  I got to the OB/GYN Thursday and the general surgeon on Friday.   Thanks for all of your suggestions!

Hi,

It would be advisable to schedule an appointment and see a breast specialist even if that means taking a day off from work.

You could talk to the specialist about the travel constraint, so that he/she could examine and investigate you at the earliest and chalk out a management plan based on a diagnosis.

The treatment could be then started and continued under supervision of your doctors and you could review with the specialist as and when required.

Do discuss with your doctor about getting a chest xray and ECG done.

Also post us the reports when they come in.

Let us know about how you are doing and if you have any other doubts.

Regards.

The mammogram and ultrasound were not showing anything....I had the excisional biopsy because my OB/GYN and general surgeon felt the lump that I was feeling at first.  The pathology report from the biopsy showed fibroadenoma.

Since the biopsy I have noticed a lump around where the pain is plus I got four dime sized red marks on that breast when I applied heat to them as the doctor suggested.  Which I got a skin biopsy done last week because of the red marks and will get my results back tomorrow from that.

I have not been to a breast specialist because there isn't one in my town.  The closest breast specialist is two hours away.

No, no one has suggested an MRI yet.

There is no injury or trauma that I am aware of that would be causing this and I don't have GERD.

No chest xray or ECG has been done.  Right now the two doctors together are starting to run tests to rule out the worst case senerios first.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Hi,

What does your mammogram and ultrasound report say?

Do you have any abnormal features on breast self examination like breast lump, skin changes or nipple discharge, etc?

What does your breast specialist say about this?

Has an MRI been advised?

The pain could be due to trauma, injury or due to GERD or reflux. Have these been ruled out?

Has a chest xray and ECG been done?

Keep us posted.

Regards.
