cyst or tumor?

My mom had an annual mamogram and breast US last two weeks. The doctor said that it was found that no abnormal seen in mamogram but in US they found a well-tiny mass size 0.4X0.6 cm at the left breast, possibly benign or fibroadenoma. She impressed that this is "BIRAD 3.I know that fibroadenoma was commonly found in young woman (my mom is 59 years old.)

I asked my friend who is radiologist to look at the US again and she told me it can possible both of solid tumor or cyst. As the size is very small, it cannot make definite suggestion for it. She would impress this as "BIRAD-2".

I will take my mom to see the surgeon tomorrow. I still have concern that this small mass is benigh or malignant. Do you and any suggestion?

Thanks ... I was just curious due to the fact that both BIRADS were below the score recommended for biopsy. As you probably know a diagnosis can't be made by exams alone ... it always takes some type of biopsy to be sure. Hope your Mom does well ..  Regards .

Thank you japdip.

As my mom had mamogram and US in her annual physical check up, the check-up doctor advised a consult wth a surgeon.

A biopsy isn't usually recommended with either a BIRAD 2 or 3 so I'm curious as to who advised a consult with a surgeon. Fibroadenomas occur at any age although they are often found in younger women. They are a result of Fibrocystic Breast Disease which occurs at any age. If this was seen on US and not mammogram it might well be cystic in nature.    Regards ....
