mammogram findings

I had my first mammogram last saturday and my doctor called me and told me that I have 2 well defined nodules in my right breast.  They said that they could be possilbe cysts or intramammory nodes.  What does that mean?  I am having an ultrasound on June 12th.  Is this something I should be worried about.

Hi there.

Nodules are common findings on mammograms and these are most commonly from benign causes like fibroadenoma or fibrocystic disease.  It is important to note the over all impression of the mammogram findings in terms of the BIRADS category (this is a standardized reporting system for mammograms).  The BIRADS score ranges from 0-5 with 5 saying that the findings are most likely malignant.  I suggest that you ask the radiologist about the over all BIRADS report and the over all impression from the mammogram.  I agree with the ultrasound as this may give your doctors more clues regarding the etiology of these nodules.

Regards and God bless.
