Thank you for your input, vet does not think Bear would benefit from phos binder, the numbers are not high enough, already been on felinecrf.org, actually spent hours of research and lots of money at the vet. I am trying to like everyone else to keep the numbers down. Two weeks before he was diagnosed I had to put to sleep my 16 year old tabby (Looney) due to CRF. Looney went down very quickly inspite of my efforts to help him, so I am trying to not have that happen again. Wanting to find out if accupuncture would help.
Thank you again everybody
I'm so sorry to hear about your Maine Coon. Our 16 y/o Maine Coon was recently diagnosed with CRF (chronic renal failure) and she "crashed" a couple of weeks ago. I've been on 24 x 7 watch trying to keep her comfortable. I've found that the fluids help and she was licking her lips a lot and not eating (I figured out she had an upset stomach) so I started her on Slippery Elm and it is doing wonders for her!
As for food (not to be contrary to opus88), with a CRF kitty, every thing you ever knew about feeding quality food pretty much has to go out the window. It is more important to get them to eat ANYTHING. I never thought I would buy a can of Fancy Feast but know I feel like writing the company a thank-you letter.
She was also very wobbly when walking and I started adding Aluminum Hydroxide (phosphorus binder) to every meal and that has helped alot, too.
I highly recommend felinecrf dot org'w website, along with this one, so you can check for symptoms and possible solutions.
Best of luck to you.
Good evening!
My wife and I gave our kitty Calamity Jane SQ fluids for the better part of 2 years as her kidneys got weaker; 75 - 100 ml 3 - 4 times a week (vet showed us how and sold us the supplies). No other meds as the Ringer's Lactate solution did the trick. So, I can;t speak to other meds.
Cammie made it to 21 years 4 months old, a pair of strokes finally laid her low. She ate her regular diet of Purina or Friskies "Senior Formula" dry and canned.
So, at a relatively young 14, your kitty has a shot at many more years.
hi and welcome, I am so sorry to hear about your kitty and the kidney failure, don't give up hope with good care kitty can live well for yet more years..
we are not Vets on this site just pet owners...some may answer with their experiences later.
I can't give you any advice other than to be sure to have your kitty on a very high quality can food with NO grains...
