We had two cats one aged 14 and one aged 7, we recently lost the 14 year old and decided to get another two kittens who are absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately our resident cat hasn't taken to them at all, if it was just that I would give him time and plenty of love until (hopefully) it's gets better but he's more or less stopped eating, he's eating small amounts but nothing significant. We took him to the vets yesterday who diagnosed a sore throat and gave him some antibiotics which we are continuing to give him but he's still not really eating anything and I know he hasn't used his litter since Thursday to either pee or poop. I'm really worried about him and wondered if anybody could suggest anything we could try. I've tried to tempt him with tuna, cod, cheese and all the things that he normally quite likes but nothing's working - I'm at my wits end and feel so terribly responsible as it was me that brought in the new kitens.
-first of all you must get some food into him, he cannot go any longer without food or he's going to get very ill very quickly. I will send a video on how to assist feed with a syringe or dropper until he gets going again. get a high calorie good brand of cat food, no grains mostly all good meat.
-meanwhile tempt him with human foods, I cooked(boiled) some chicken parts in water..for a few hours, SAVE the liquid...pick all the chicken off the bones carefully so as not to have any little bones remaining(be sure) jar this with liquid and all...let it set and it will gel, give him lots of the gel with some chicken pieces...cats love this gel(high fat) and its very good for them when tummy is feeling upset
-get the Vet to prescribe an appetite stimulant...I got one called Mirtazapine 7mg. don't know if you have same drug in UK but they would have something similar
-I would really hesitate to give the antibiotic......probably very likely NOT needed plus it only tends to upset the tummy thus causing more lack of appetite, so its defeating the initial problem
-MAKE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN...to have your older kittys dish and litter box in a SEPARATE area of the house...AWAY from the new kitties, so he has a space to himself and can eat/drink and eliminate AWAY from the new ones..this is very important!!!!
heres a youtube video, if you can't open this where your at...just do a google search on assist feeding cats
