Friday I went to my volunteer shift at Cat Adoption Team, and fell in love with a cat that I hadn't met before. He's totally handsome, sweet, gentle, but also bright and lively. The shelter had named him Oingo Boingo. I finished my shift, went back into the free roam room where he was, spent time with him and knew THIS is the one!
I talked to my roommate that night, and she agreed that he sounded good, and that she's go with me to meet him on Saturday. After my yoga and other stuff, we headed to the shelter, and he WASN'T there! I found out that he was moved to an outreach location in a PetSmart: we headed there. He was in a cage, not too happy, and the adoption counselor's shift had ended about a half hour before.
Sunday, I headed to the shelter and got all of his health and background information, filled out an adoption application, bought a new carrier, two litter boxes, some toys, and stuff. I was at the PetSmart before the A.C. for that day showed up. I finished my paperwork, bought 40 lbs.of litter, food, a cool bed, a laser toy, other toys, a cardboard scratcher/play cavern, food & water dishes, etc.
I rushed it all home, set up the litter boxes (one downstairs, one in the bathroom for my bedroom), opened toys, put the bed where he couldn't miss it, all sorts of preparations to keep him in my room for a few days until he's comfy with his new home.
My roommate got home from a trip with her mom and drove me back up to pick up my new boy. Another cat tried to climb in the carrier, but we got him out and took the right handsome fellow home. He spent some time under the bed. My roommate went to Costco & bought a new cat tree so he could look out the window at the trees and bird and squirrels, then washed the couch cover that she had for when Fluffy was here.
We decided, after much discussion, that his name is Beau, since he's so handsome. His middle name will be Tyler, after my roommate's grandson who loves cats (had a great time at CAT when he recently visited from California). For short I'll call him Beau Ty; cute, huh?
I got him to come out from under the bed. He didn't know what to think of the floor-to-ceiling 8 foot long mirrored closet doors; he arched his back and walked sideways checking out that other cat. Once he figured everything out, he explored the room, bathroom, behind the toilet, under the computer desk; everywhere he could fit.
I showed him the litter box, he walked right in and went pee; he's home!
He loves his Da Bird toy, his Kitty Hooch catnip mouse, the laser chase toy, the balls, pretty much everything, including me and my roommate. He slept on my bed, OK, on me, on the pillow next to me, on the fleece blanket at the foot of the bed. I woke up at 4 am to go potty and he was quietly playing with his toys. Since I was up, though, all bets were off! He wanted to chase Da Bird!
Today he went downstairs with me, looked around, then hurried back up to my room. I'll keep him in this comfort zone for a while.
Beau's about a year old and healthy. He was found as a stray, though he had a flea collar on and no ear mites, worms, or fleas. He's such a sweetheart; I'm so lucky to have found him!
I'm going to go post a few pictures of him...
