L-Lysine

I haven't updated about Taz lately but we are still treating him for his eye and Histoplasmosis.  Right now the problem we are having is getting his eye to cooperate and get better.  He had an ulcer in January and we got it better and stopped some of his eye drops.  In the 4 weeks since then and now he has two more.  We are again giving him the 3 drops- one to lower pressure, one antiviral to try to control the Herpes we think he has and then an antibiotic to keep him from getting a bacterial infection since he's already fighting the histo.

Today the vet told me to give him L-Lysine.  He wants to do 500 mg 2x day.  All I can find here in town is a chew for cats that he would have to have 8 a day of since they are 125mg each.  I found the human version and it's a big pill.  I know there are posters who have used the powder and found the links to iherb.  My question is what would the smallest amount to mix it with for him to eat.  He prefers dry food and is really picky about the canned.  I want to make sure he gets it all.

HELP!

Hi Ali...I give the pure powdered Lysine to Jade for herpes also.  Just sprinkle it on her WET food, I've been doing this for coming up on 2yrs.  Lysine tastes a little like salt, Jade doesn't even notice it.  I don't remember if Taz is on wet or dry food, but if wet, try just mixing it in his meal.

Everyone talking about syringing, I hope I'm not doing it wrong!?

Good luck honey, keep us posted...

Oh No!
Say it ain't so!!!!! I am  speechless! If the vet thinks Taz has herpes virus he also may have some dental disease (like stomatitis) to go along with it. If so that could be why he shy's away from the chews--he can't chew. Has the vet checked his mouth also?

They are really moist and can easily be broken up and he can even lick them up the crumbs. I  think it is wonderful you have vet school near you. Taz is in the best hands yours and theirs.

Sure hope his eyes get better, it hurts me to even think how much pain he is in. Mouth ulcers are bad enough, but the eyes--Wow. He is a very brave little man, and thank goodness he is with someone who loves and cares for him.
Keep us posted, K?

I find it the easiest to dissolve in just a small amount of water and use a dropper...syringes aren't as easy to handle and sometimes while pushing the plunger its easy to shoot a large amount in and that isn't good, need to administer slowly so the liquid isn't aspirated into the lungs...
place the dropper in the back part of his lips near his back molars...never give in the front of the mouth nor directly into his mouth, and remember give slowly, good luck:)

Well, I got the treats and powder last week...

He won't eat the treat unless forced to- not really forced but encouraged... Now my other two cats will fight me for them.  They really like it.

I haven't tried the powder yet.  I'm trying to decide what I want to dissolve it in.  Do I do water and use a syringe or something he finds tasty but not good for him and let him lick it up. AND what does he find tasty as liquid?  no clue  :)

Hi Ali,

I think he will love the treats. Meezy is VERY picky, and she gobbles them up!  Although they have a lot of junk in them--kids like junk foo--what can I say.

Just to let you know we had a cat who had to have corneal Implants their eyes were so bad, and they never missed a beat. They are marvelous adaptable creatures. So it is only the Pain right now that is getting to Taz, and can not blame him--so terribly painful.

I am also saying prayers for the Taz Man!

I'm very lucky that I have a vet school here so I have access to some awesome people.  I've worked with different students but the same residents and instructors.  They love him because he will sit there and let them look in his eye without clawing or fighting.  When I talked to the resident last night he said that when he saw Taz in the morning he really scared him.  He just looked so horrible.  :(  He even fought him all day. :) We both thought we were losing him.  The blood work is good so it has to be mainly his eye that has him miserable.  I hope so.

I totally understand the treat thing.  I want to try that for now so it's not an additional thing I have to shove in his mouth or pry his eye open for.  He's pretty picky about taste and texture so I will be surprised if he eats it but I hope so.

oh let me tell you I got a couple that would benefit from some 'family' counseling as well CM....lol, yes we are slaves to them and in truth I wouldn't have it any other way:)
If the treats work for Meezy don't change a thing...getting the Lysine is whats important!!

Oh I hear you Opus! That is why my cat LOVES these Tabs. Theyare Kitty Crack indeed. Who knew my Meezy would become an addict, but it is the ONLY thing going in her toothless little mouth.

Your way is the best way and least expensive.....but like you say "any L-Lysine is better than none"

I have got to tell you, I medicated hundreds of cats and not one of them was as difficult as the one I have to tell you I break out in a cold sweat when it comes time for meds . She is 8 lbs , with no teeth! I mean seriously, we need to go to family counseling.

p.s....one scoopful is equal to one teaspoon....

aligator I told you wrong on first post, I thought the Carlson Labs were equal to 1200mg per scoopful(teas) I now see its 1000 mg....so be easier measuring for you.

anyone ordering from iherb for the first time quote this code and get I think 10% off your first order

CML and Aligator....just want to jump in here and give some additional info for anyone using or thinking of using L-lysine....

CML thats great if you've found away your kitty will willingly take the Lysine in treat form, any is better than none. however if you look at the cost of these treats in comparison to the 'pure' lysine powder...treats contain...brewers yeast, canola oil, chicken flavor, citric acid, glycerin, silicone dioxide, sodium, soy.....etc.
sodium and soy for two are not good for cats!!!

http://www.vetriscience.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=900743120

in 2 chews you get a total of 250mg of lysine.....compare that to one scoopful of the pure lysine giving 1000 mg.....and you get many scoopfuls from one jar....for $6.44, because its in pure form(no wheat, yeast, soy etc) you use alot less....

Hi Ali,

I also am sorry to hear poor Taz is still having corneal ulcers. My Meezy has the herpes virus , so I give her L-lysine every day . It seems to help!

I tried everything on the market before I found these two L-Lysine treats that she just LOVES.
If you want to try a treat formuls these are the names:

Optixcare L-Lysine Chews--500mg  (2 chews) twice  day. They are soft and yummy, so you can actually break them in half . I get them at Vet Depot--866-456-0400, they are made by Adventix.

-Vetri-Lysine Plus- these are bite size fish chews-Go to www.vetriscience.com  or 1-800-882-9993. You can try Vet Depot for these also they may be a little less expensive. These are also 500mg for 2 tabs.

These are on the expensive side.
Little did I know that my little mutt of a cat would turn out to be "High Maintanance"

Whatever you choose, please keep us posted on Taz, K?

Hi Ali, sorry Taz is still struggling so much... But sounds like u hv a good Vet and are keeping on top of it well. Yes buy the Carlson labs lysine frm I herb, it's a powder wth a small scoop included, a full scoop equals 1200mg..so use just a bit less mix with a tiny amount of water enough to dissolve it all than give it to him with a dropper or syringe....just be sure to give it slowly. 2000mg is a high dose, I would only use that high for a week at most....when the eye clears it's good to keep up with a maintenance dose of 250mg probably long term
