My boy

Abby is going to the vet today.  He is feeling much, much better. Skin is turning pink again. He has been grooming himself, which he stopped doing so when he got sick.  Still skinny and almost no muscle mass but we’ll get there. He is also showing interest in cooked chicken. I have not given him cooked or raw meals and  will not give him raw foods until he gets 100% better. He still rejects Hill’s, and I don’t blame him. That food smells horrible. Makes me gag! Yuck! But, he was showing interest in MY chicken last night, so much so that his head was almost completely in my plate. He practically threw himself into my food lol. Welcome back, Abby. About time he'd show interest in food and eating on his own!

The appt is at 11:00am. I’m at work but will be on the phone during the apt as I don’t want to miss anything. Not that I don’t trust my husband.

Keep him in your prayers, please…and let me know how the kids are doing!

It all sounds like Abby is making progress to me.  I think she wants some people food, like your chicken.  That's a good idea to ask the Vet about the Royal Canin; if he likes it, maybe it would help with the weight.  Hang in there little Abby, and you, too.  He's one lucky kitty to have you taking care of him.

Guys,

I just got home. Reading the doctor's report, it says my cat was weak but improved. But then my husband says Abby was jumping up and down so.....
The 25 cc of food is just for two days, four times a day. Then we increase that amount to 30 cc. They asked if we attempted to feed him something other than l/d, 'because I see that this cat eats raw food..so have you tried giving him raw food?'
My husband said no. The the vet asked again. My husband replied with a 'No' and then he said Abby had his head in my plate and wanted to eat chicken. So vet brought in food, not Hill's, but something else. Abby did NOT eat it lol. Then my husband gave him some treats here at home and he ATE the treats. He wants to eat on his own. He just is being too picky. I was thinking of maybe buying Royal Canin to get him to eat wet foods before introducing him to his old diet. I'll ask the vet.

April,
I got the card :)
Thank you! I love the picture. Your kids look great! You should be getting mine real soon. How's Misha?

Guys.....you are great! I am so lucky to have a group of caring friends :) Thank you for your support. I tend to freak out, because I'm following the doctor's orders and instructions yet my cat lost over a pound since I got him?? Makes no sense. So I guess we were not feeding him enough. I did tell ya'll he still looked skinny, didn't I? I just didn't think it would be over a pound less. He has NO muscle mass. That's so sad. He weighs less than a feather...  :(
Hugs!

good news and don't worry abt the weight loss..due to surgery yes and also the Vet starting the feed tube amt slowly so he could tolerate, now with the increase and a few snacks he will soon gain what he lost( recently)..than.give him a few months and he'll put on his original weight too!...
so glad the jaundice has decreased all positive signs...this will take time PK...watch he'll be in the Christmas turkey too.
take care..relax

No no PK, Abby is coming along exactly to be expected.  He's doing great...just needs more calories and fattening up, otherwise, he's recovering really really well.  Tube feeding can only go so fast.  This is not a nightmare.  Last WEEK was a nightmare.  I know this is slow progress, but it's definitely progress.  You and hubby are doing a Great Job!!  Another week and you will see even more improvement.  Don't worry about not feeding Abby the chicken...I would've followed the vets instructions too, but now you know so between the tube feeding and Abby eating a little something of the raw food, he's going to start gaining weight quicker, you'll see :)

I think April said it very well :)

I agree with the others, PK. I think overall the news is good. Don't panic that he's lost some weight. He's recovering from major surgery! Like the others said, us humans tend to lose weight after a big surgery like that too. I know after my surgery I did not want to eat and I think my stomach shrank. I had no interest in food. I had to gradually add in stuff.

You said his incision looks good and is healing nicely, he's not so yellow, he's showing interest in your food, he's exploring more in the house, not hiding as much and he's jumping up on your bed, purring, etc. I say that's all very good news!
Give him time. Baby him and slowly start fattening our boy back up, little by little. Soon he'll be a big boy again, fat and happy! You'll see! :)

Well my husband called, and here is what they did:

They looked at the incisions. Looked clean to them (of course it’s clean. Mommy keeps his belly clean and good)
They also gave him a shot of B12, and recommended to increase the amount of food. Also,  they gave him his monthly de-wormer. He will be eating 25 cc now instead of 20, for two days, four times a week. Then after two days, he’ll be eating 30 cc. More prescriptions. But I’ll have to wait to get home because hubby doesn’t remember the name of the medication

The vitamin, consultation etc did not cost us anything. It was covered by the certificate. Go figure. We got lucky.

He was at 9.6 lbs. He is down to 8.1 lbs. My husband told them about Abby’s interest in my food. They asked if we fed him the chicken, and he said ‘No’. But, it looks like they would have wanted us to give him a bit of chicken. Oh well!! I’m strictly following orders.

They did notice he is less yellow…

This is a nightmare.

What do you guys think?

PK  i think our babies are just like we are when it comes to surgery.  Usually we lose weight too as our bodies are using all the nutrients to get better.  Afterwards we gain it back and then some!!  Abby is well on the road to recovery and the weight will be the last thing to come back.  I am thrilled to hear he is in your plate and grooming himself and his pink skin is coming back!!!  Now we just have to fatten him up!!!!!!!!!!!!    sara

But I think that's to be expected, right?  Don't panic yet.  I think the improvement overall is where the concentration would lie.  Your vet will likely just up the food/calorie intake.

Ugh..something wrong with my computer...if I don't come back, that's why

I got not so promising news. My husband is at the vet's right now. I called him, but because he is with the doctor, the only thing he could tell me was that Abby had lost weight!! Not good. Not good!

And to think Abby was on deaths door just a week ago!  You have an amazing cat, but it's really you and your husbands diligent care that's pulling Abby back to health.  The grooming and interest in food is a turning point.  This is great news, PK.  The vet will give you a big gold star for his progress :)

Our vet tried to give our Abby the Hills rx food for her scratching, but she would never eat it.  We were also told to try it with Jade 3yrs ago since we didn't know WHAT was wrong with her and of course, you like to rule out a food allergy, but Jade wouldn't eat it either.  She won't eat anything that's "smelly."

Praying for Abby!  I think your vet is going to be impressed...

You know he is in my prayers PK and everyones...he has fought thru so darn much and sounds like he is getting very healthy again thanks to your good care..
My cats that were prescribed HILLs would never eat it either...or anyother of the Vet brand cats foods like MediCal...yeah something in the smell.
Why wouldn't you give him a taste of the chicken?? this certainly wouldn't harm him,,,My Nemo loves his cooked chicken....it would be good for Abby to get a taste of something again in his mouth.
Great that he is getting the urge to want to eat...get your Vet to recommend something other than these 'medical' foods...ask Tammy09 she is up on the nutrition end of pet foods and these 'medical' foods that are promoted...
GOOD LUCK ABBY
