Problem in cat after anal sacs expressed

This is my first time on any forum but I really need some advice.  My 12 year old cat went in for a dental cleaning with 4 teeth extractions.  All labs done prior were normal.  Her bowel habits were normal with no constipation nor diarrhea.  When the vet called to update us after surgery he said her anal sacs were so swollen so he expressed them while she was under anesthesia.  He said he got out a lot of sticky smelly secretion.  He said she must have been having a hard time pooping and I said not at all and had never had expression before.  We picked her up that night & noticed immediately she was walking with VERY painful back legs and haunches.  She was on pain meds and the next day began to eat and drink and use her litter pan.  BUT she couldn't walk very well- obviously her butt and back haunches were in pain. We called the vet.......he wasn't worried, said they could be sore from injections,  We asked if there could be problems with pain from anal sac & he said "not at all"  Day 3-  walking is STILL very painful even  on her buprenex for pain.  Right now its her bottom not her teeth that are bothering her.  Any advice?

I don't have much advice, but I am sure someone on this site will. With my previous male cat, I noticed a large swelling near his anus and brought him in and they said he needed his anal sacs expressed, and that was the first time I had heard of it. He had no problems walking afterwards, so I don't think it's normal. I don't see how injections would hurt for that long, so it seems like there may be some soreness or maybe it just feels different to her. My advice would be to take her back in if if she doesn't improve by tomorrow (and they shouldn't charge for the visit since it's a follow-up to something they likely caused). It's good she had a bowel movement, though, that's a good sign. Wish I knew more on the topic.

Hi Deedle,

I agree with Jade , but would go back to your original vet for antibiotics. This is a tricky procedure and the anal sacs may now be infected. Your vet should follow-up for infection . Also be sure they were just impacted and not abscessed

Either way something is not right and your vet is responsible. I would tell him to make it right or you will go somewhere else and send the bill to him.
He will take you serious now!

Please let us know how your little girl is doing.
Thanks.CML
