Wondering

Hi everyone,,I was wondering something. I have a healthy sized black kitty about 16yrs old. Lately he has been going to the basement door and stands there and howls so loud he sounds like he is in pain. I let him down in the basement he goes down there and howls/meows more. This goes on all day and night long. Its a low deep sounding meow. He is eating good,,going to the bathroom regulary and playful with his brothers. What is wrong with him?

good for you.....if he is holding his urine in and pooping outside the box those are very classic signs of crystals...b/c it hurts they will tend to hold it or go outside the box (even for pooping) b/c he is associating pain with the litter box use....glad your getting him checked out. also please feed wet food and not dry esp with males....the dry food is so dehydrating they can never compensate by drinking enough water to keep these crystals flushed out of their bladders.
good luck....

But Bkitty, see, just like humans, you don't want your kitty on antibiotics if it's not necessary, otherwise, a resistance is built up.  I had to take Jade in a few months ago suspecting a UTI.  Her bladder was expressed, but had to wait over the weekend for results.  Meanwhile, I'm given Clavamox and told to begin right away.  I did Not, I waited and guess what...Jade did Not have a bladder infection or anything else wrong so starting her on that antib when there was nothing wrong - we would of had to use up the medicine, just like humans do and for what...for nothing.  Stress her - stress us.

The antib's are given right away as both a precaution, but also to appease the owner - like you're doing something *good* for kitty when in fact, all you're doing is building up her resistance to antib's unnecessarily.  Do you see?  If I were you, I would wait for a diagnosis.  We just want what's best for kitty, is all.

I have that vets cell phone # and believe me Ill call anytime if he gets in trouble. I dont care what time it is. We stopped and got some wet food at Petco. He is not in distress-said the amoxi drops will take about 3 days to kick in but he should be better by day 5? He seemed more worried about the blood work because of his age. Im supposed to check his bladder several times a day but its hard cuz he is soo fat. He is home eating good and playful.

One of my older girls had a UTI (with crystals) when we lived in Ohio back in the early 90's, the vet recommended adding a little cider vinegar to our kitties' water...just a couple of tablespoons in each quart.  The idea he had is turn the water a tiny bit acidic.

Hopefully Beener will get several more good years with you.

sorry but this makes me insane.....they can express his urine they DON'T **** have to wait for a cat to pee....and to give an antibiotic when they don't *** even know if there is an infection or not..that is just wrong. There can be crystals present without necessarily having a UTI.
be sure to feed him the wet diet and offer lots of water and hopefully if this was the problem they will flush out, since the Vet clinic was of no help in determining IF he had crystals or not????

sorry I just get very upset with clinic's that do this sort of thing....anyway glad the blood work was good..
