are steroids a good choice

there was a tumor that was found 2 weeks ago on my cats leg the size of a tennis ball !  the vet told us that in order to remove the tumor  they would have to remove the leg and part of his pelvis ! we decided not to do that since it would probably do more bad then good!  the biopsy on the fluid inside of the tumor came on neg yet the doctor is telling us that it is cancer ! how can that be? anyway my question is would steroids help reduce the size of his tumor to make him more comftorable?

I see these posts were quite a while ago. What was the outcome of both pets? I just found out that my cat has a tumor under her tongue and the doc. says that most all tumors in the mouth are malignant. He wants to do a steroid injection after we try antibiotics (for her teeth issues) as a last resort. She is 17 and I do NOT want to lose my baby! :-(

The tumor will shrink a little from medication.  Our cat had a tumor in her sinuses and we used the medication which helped shrink it.  It made her a little more comfortable.  We did not want to put her through any surgery or chemo being that she was 16.  She had feline leukemia ever since she was a kitten and we found her at about 6 months of age, so she lived a long time.

yea i actually went to a specialist and i was told the same thing!  i want to do more thing but its so expensive to do anyother test! they told me that the cat scan alone is 2000 and if i decide to do surgery it be another 5000!  and do i really want my cat walking around without 1 leg and half of his pelvis missing?  tough choice to make ! i think im just gona get a biopsy of the tumor it self to see if it malignant or not and maybe an xray to see if it spread over to the lungs! what do you think?

I'm so sorry to here the vet say it's cancer.  It's odd that the fluid biopsy would say normal and he say it is cancer.  I don't know much about this.  But, I have a cat who has a tumor on her thyroid.  I was told that the feel of it suggests that it is not malignant, but I worry too!  Have you asked the vet more questions - or maybe take him to another vet for a second opinion?
