thank you for all the replies! i will try searching for the brands that you all have recommended but i'm not sure if the pet shops in Singapore actually sell them. I went to the pet shop yesterday and thought that hitachi cat litter seems quite good. what do y'all think?
here's a pict of the Deodorizing system paper pellets (8l). it claims to be anti-bacteria, clumps well and is very absorbent. It seems to be really good...

I know a young lady from Japan who has a picture of her mother's cat actually using the toilet.  It's a really funny picture.  You can actually see the pee coming out of the cat.  I've seen other cats that were toilet trained.  I think you have to teach them when they're younger cats, though, if you ever hope to toilet train them.  I would love it if I could train Akira, but I just don't think I have the energy to expend on teaching her.  Plus, she is already seven years old.  She would probably just look at me, like:  What's wrong with you?

we use tidy cats. when venus was a kitten we used schweat litter. it is a wheat based litter (no harsh chemicals that are bad for kittens and pregnant women) and that covered the odors fabulously and was a great clumping litter. but it's expensive. for a 10 lb bag it was almost $20.

Have you seen this video yet?

And like this one there are plenty of online videos on how to toilet train your cat. Personally, I think it's great. I never trained my cats for lack of time. Just preparing their raw diet takes a long time, plus I work long hours.

If you do go ahead and go for it, make sure you teach kitty to flush lol.....seriously...water does not cover odors. Litter does....at least Fresh Step does.

thank you! i will continue using litter.

Do you have any recommendation on good clumping litter. i'm using the PeeWee pine pellets kind of cat litter. it's not really good since it sometimes does have some sharp edges and that it doesn't clump at all. just that it becomes pine shavings when it's wet.

i've used a japanese brand cat litter before and it's really good but it's no longer produced. the cat litter look like white pellets and clumps together very well... it also turns green when it's soiled. is there any cat litter close to that? my kitten would rather not use the cat litter if it's sand. is there any good alternative that clumps well but is in pellets form?

i don't think it is possible to toilet train a cat. (despite what is seen on meet the parents.) cats were not meant to use the toilet.  just litter train him. keep the litter clean and let him dig and squat like cats were meant to do.
