post op

I took my kitten (4 months) to get spayed having been told it was female.  The vet opened her up and then found that it was male, surely they should have noticed this in the first place.  They castrated as well.  Its 2 days post op and he is listless and being sick and has the runs.  Any advice please

Thanks for the response, going to get an appt with them i think. to be  honest, i thought it was a female but they performed a castration so they must have found boy parts.  when i went to collect him, they said they had a good dig around but couldnt find a uterous and then they looked and found tiny balls.  poor thing.

Well, it certainly does seem they would have done at least a casual exam, and at 4 months you don't have to look to hard to figure out the difference between a boy and a girl.  Did the vet happen to say the little guy had anything special going on like undescended testes?

I would call the vet's office tomorrow and ask if there is anything to worry about in this post-op reaction, i.e., did they actually take out some piece of the baby's internal organs thinking they were ovaries, before finally figuring out that the cat was a male, or did they just look in and then sew the little guy up?  If they act cagey or silly, then I would go to another vet and tell him or her your concerns.  But they should be pretty straightforward with you.  It is a stupid mistake to have made, but if it is a good vet they will acknowledge it as such and cover costs of fixing it.
