Anyone had numbness in the tongue after surgery?

Hello, everyone! ! I had my first surgery the 29th and I have some numbness of the tongue. I was wondering if any of you have experienced this and if it's normal. I am a newbie to this group and actually really like this support group! Made a few friends and it's great to get advice from people who have been through the same experiences. Thanks ~Ginger

Hi... after I woke up from my surgery about 6 weeks ago, I too had numbness in my tongue and swallowing was a bit tricky too. The surgeon told me then that there are nerves at the base of the brain, just under the chiari, are linked to the feeling in the tongue, and that during surgery these must have got touched accidentally. He told me the feeling would come back, after about 3-4 weeks mine started feeling better  and is now pretty much normal again.

Thank you for your inpit! I actually had my 2week post op appointment today and my NS said the same thing. Something about all the nerves being connected in the back of neck and that it should stop after awhile. I will say since I first posted this question it has gotten better :) still have some numbness at the very tip of my tongue but it has really improved  in just a few short days. I'm gonna add you to my friends list of thats ok. I'm new to this group and I have to say I really love it. Getting advice from great non-judgmental people who know what I am going through having endured the same things is priceless. You know even when I'm having an off ooty party day  lol

Hi! I woke up from my second surgery with half my tongue numb.  It was like a line ran down the middle of my tongue and the right side was completely numb.  The dr said it was from the breathing tube pressing on a nerve and that it would come back.  It took about 1.5 - 2 months but it did get totally back to normal!

Hi Ginger....it can be thrush....so talk to your Dr asap about this....it could also be a pinched nerve somewhere or an odd reaction to meds....but see your Dr and let him/her decide.

Hi Ginger! Welcome & we all understand your condition!'
I had immediate numbness and severe swelling after my surgery...I'd forgotten until someone here asked about it- but in the hospital, I had a hard time speaking, taking my meds.(thyroid & gabapentin)...it didn't go down/stop for about 2weeks. I was told it had to do w/the position you're placed in during the surgery, (you're in that face down position for ...for me it was a little over 5hrs.), as well as the tube down your throat. You'd think one wouldn't be able to forget such a feeling, when I remembered it was like a horrible movie flashback! lol.
But yes, I believe many experience this (I'm sure Selma will have a better way of explaining it-she's our wealth of knowledge here ;) )
You should bring it to your Dr's attn. if you haven't though...I think I may have had thrush, untreated.
Hope this helps!
