6 year old sleep issue

Until recently, my 6 year old son has been a very good sleeper, sleeping in his own bed, and getting a good nights sleep, 10-11hours each night, however, just recently, after he has been asleep an hour or so, he starts screaming and coughing and finds it hard to settle, this can go on for a good few hours. He wanders sometimes during this, and has little recollection of this in the morning. It is getting rather an issue as it disturbs he rest of the family, and there is no reason we can see for it as he is his normal healthy self during the day.
We thought maybe it was due to the lack of routine, as it is now the 6 weeks school holidays and he's not at school but we have mostly kept up his normal bedtime routine

Hi,  I'm actually a sleep walker at times.  (fun---  NOT).  When I do it, it is often that something wakes me half way and then I either react in a startled way or I act out what I'm dreaming about.  It usually happens (and thankfully not frequently anymore) when I'm slightly worried about something and over tired.

Has your son started school recently or is he about to?

The cough could be the thing that startles him awake but not enough to get him all the way awake.

Add a fan to his room.  This helps me to stay asleep, the white noise of it.

good luck

The screaming and finding it hard to settle with no memory of it later might mean he is in a half-awake state during that time, like sleepwalkers are.  Do get the cough checked, maybe it's the trigger as Margy suggests.

You say he coughs, well that probably wakes him up I would have the cough checked out, many have coughs this year that wont go away, i think its from environmental allergies ., the Doctor may tell you to give him some allergy med.
