My grandson is 5 yrs old... he's had "accidents" in the past by in the past couple of weeks it's gotten worse....  His mom and dad have separated.... dad left mom moved with him and his younger sibling 3yrs old back to her parents home... in the same week had to give up his 2 dogs and then start kindergarten (OMG!!) for any child this would be devastating....  he has had numerous accidents at school every day.....  It's hard not to punish him ... but don't know which was to go... please help!

If he is kind and good with animals it may help if another pet was introduced into his life .

I want to thank everyone for their responses.... I agree that he should not be punished.  I have been working with him with encouragement and lots of love....  It takes time to heal a broken heart and he's hurting right now...  Thanks again, Deb

No punishing that wont help in fact will make it worse, if he has recently started kindergarten very often the teachers forget to rind the children to use the bathroom .so have a word with the teacher . He has had a lot to deal with emotionally he needs plenty of positive attention , fun and games .good hes got you batting for him ...

He might have simply been responding to all the stress, but he might also have fecal impaction going on.  It's when a child "holds it"  a lot, and it winds up distending the colon and bowel and making it much less effective at compressing, so a lot of fecal material just gets hardened and stuck in there.  Then only a little bit of liquidy poop can slip by the blockage.  The hallmark of this is that the child doesn't even know when it is going to slip out, they have lost their ability to feel the pressure and to compress the colon.  Look up fecal obstruction and encopresis, and if it sounds familiar, get him to the pediatrician and ask if he can see a pediatric gastroenterologist if the pediatrician seems to blow it off.  Some poor kids get punished and scolded for what is in essence a disfunctional lower intestine.
