confusion

Can edema of the feet and ankles cause confusion in the elderly at times?   Also can you explain if left ventricle systolic dysfunction means right or left heart failure?

Hi,

The edema of the ankles commonly occurs in the elderly due to a poor functioning of the heart and hence there’s stasis of the blood around the lower extremities resulting in edema of the feet due to extravasation of the fluids from the blood. Due to the poor functioning of the heart, there’s poor blood supply to the brain also which can result in confusion in the elderly.

Left ventricular systolic dysfunction means left heart failure.

I hope that helps. Please do keep me posted. Kind Regards.

Hi,

Left ventricular systolic dysfunction refers to left heart failure. The ventricle is not able to pump blood to all parts of the body. This may co-exist with right heart failure.

Edema of feet and ankles does not cause confusion, but the cause of this swelling can cause confusion in anyone, not just the elderly. For example, heart failure can cause decreased blood supply to the brain and hence confusion.

Do come back if you have further queries, or a specific case history to discuss.

Regards
