Babies born during World Cup

This is funny....but I sure feel sorry for these kids.  What on earth are their parents thinking!!!

We already know that nine months from now should provide South Africa with a robust baby boom, as the month-long party that is the World Cup usually brings with it an increase in the number of tiny human lives born into this world the following March. But you may not know that people like to get the baby-making machine cranking even before the World Cup madness comes around to their home country. Because of this, several couples were blessed with the miracle of life during the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup between South Africa and Mexico, one of the biggest events in African sporting history. So in order to commemorate the historic day on which their babies were born, several couples generously opted to give their kids a childhood of merciless teasing by giving them ridiculous World Cup-themed names. From Afrique en ligne:

One of the babies born during the opening game of the World Cup has been named 'Ke Nako', a World Cup slogan that means 'it is time'.

The baby boy is from a teenage mother, Busiswa Landiso, and her 21-year-old boyfriend Samuel Ntshiwa, and both are from Bloemfontein, the venue of Nigeria's next match against Greece.

The two parents are Bafana Bafana fans, and they hope the baby boy would be a Bafana star one day.

'Ke Nako' is also what the little boy from the ESPN promos keeps repeating while he waves to you in your creepy World Cup-induced night terrors. But I suppose it's cool (?) to have a slogan that has probably been plastered all over the country for the past year as your name. I can see Ke Nako leading the Bafana Bafana to the 2034 World Cup title now.

But they get better.

Another couple in Bloemfontein also had a set of boy twins while the opening match of South Africa and Mexico was on.

In honour of the two teams that played a draw, the couple, Mr and Mrs Venter, named their twins, Bafana Reinhardt Venter and Mexico Llewellyn Venter.

Bafana and Mexico Venter were born just 20 minutes after Siphiwe Tshabalala scored!

The new dad, Charl (29), who admitted to not knowing much about football, reportedly said: ''I'm giving them those names as a token of my willingness to know more about the game. My wife, Riana (26), and I knew in December that we would have twins but for them to be born on this day was a wonderful surprise.''

Those kids are going to grow up wishing their dad had known more about football. Hopefully the one thinks it's awesome to be named after his national team and the other doesn't get too tired of explaining to everyone they meet their entire life that they were named Mexico just to bookend their sibling's name.

And my favorite...

Yet another baby is named FIFA, after the world soccer's governing body.

She is named after the world football organization because she was born 10 minutes after the first World Cup game in Africa.

FIFA Ntshinga was born at Rahima Moosa Hospital in Johannesburg.

Wow. And in all caps just like that. Wow.
