Calif. baby tossed from building; mom arrested

http://news.yahoo.com/calif-baby-tossed-building-mom-arrested-124242460.html

ORANGE, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California mother whose 7-month-old son was tossed from the fourth-floor of a parking structure was arrested and booked for investigation of attempted murder, police said Tuesday.

The infant remained in critical condition at University of California, Irvine, Medical Center, said Orange police Sgt. Dan Adams.

Sonia Hermosillo, 31, of La Habra, was arrested Monday night, hours after the baby was thrown over a parking structure railing at Children's Hospital of Orange County. It's believed the baby was thrown from the fourth floor of the structure, Adams said.

Hermosillo was being held without bail.

Detectives haven't speculated on a motive, Adams said.

A witness called 911 after seeing the baby falling just after 6 p.m. on Monday.

Surveillance video showed Hermosillo's tan Chevrolet Blazer sport utility vehicle with an empty child restraint seat leaving the parking structure a short time later, the sergeant said.

The female driver was the only person inside the SUV and the license plate was traced to the Hermosillo home.

During the investigation, Adams said the La Habra Police Department notified detectives that a man reported that his wife, Sonia Hermosillo, and their son were missing.

An Orange police officer driving past Children's Hospital at 10:15 p.m. spotted the Blazer, Adams said. The SUV was stopped and Hermosillo was detained for questioning, then arrested.

That's one you won't have to worry about putting on trial and keeping in jail, then.

I think it was from the new parking structure, too. CHOC just added on to their hospital and built a large new parking structure, which is next to the freeway. Which is odd because it seems like people tend to use new structures that are built. We had a woman commit suicide at my university a year ago that jumped off the new parking structure we have. The same thing happened with another local university. What is up with that?

I heard about this in class today and it's all so close to home. :( I was just at that hospital(CHOC) the other day visiting and it's actually where I had surgeries myself as a child. It breaks my heart to hear stories like this. I heard the mother is being held and tested for mental illnesses, but I just can't understand how anyone can harm their own child or really, just any child. Sad.

While throwing the mother from the 8th floor, would solve nothing, it does seem fitting.  The one thing I'd disagree with you on, is hitting her over the head with an ax handle (why waste a good handle?).  Nope, not on your life.............. I'd want her to be fully alert going over the edge and completely terrorized for entire time it took to hit the ground.........

R Glass - that doesn't happen too often, but it's good to know that sometimes, the crook knows when it's time to pack it in.  Only thing is, if there were some way he could have survived to surface and hurt  more people; he'd not be a likely suspect because everyone now thinks he's dead....... hope his body washes up someplace so his death is a "for sure", even though hitting the water after a 165' fall is a pretty sure thing.

“State Police identified a fugitive who jumped from the Veterans Memorial Bridge in St. James Parish into the Mississippi River on Tuesday as a suspect in three homicides in Jefferson Parish as well as other crimes in Baton Rouge.
Authorities continued looking for Kylan M. Laurent, 22, of Vacherie, after he stopped his car near the top of the northbound lane of the bridge shortly after 1 p.m. and jumped over the rail, troopers said in a news release.
His leap into the river far below terminated a high-speed pursuit by State Police that injured one trooper, said Trooper Russell Graham, State Police Troop A spokesman.
The bridge deck is approximately 165 feet above the surface of the river, said Lauren Lee, spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation and Development.
Personnel with State Police, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Coast Guard and Port of South Louisiana searched for Laurent, but he had not been found as of late Tuesday.
Petty Officer Casey Ranel, spokeswoman for the Coast Guard in New Orleans, said the Coast Guard suspended its search Tuesday, but State Police said its search would continue.
Before the chase and Laurent’s leap to escape authorities, the East Baton Rouge Violent Crimes Unit, a multi-agency investigative unit in Baton Rouge, had been investigating his links to a number of criminal cases, troopers said.
The unit determined that Laurent is implicated in several crimes in Baton Rouge, including one in which he is wanted for prosecution on charges of aggravated battery and false imprisonment.
The unit later learned he is wanted in three Jefferson Parish homicide cases, troopers said.
In one of those slayings, in Kenner, Laurent is “a person of interest” in the strangulation of Anita McDonald, 22, of Flowood, Miss., city police said.
Kenner Police Chief Steve Caraway said that when the pursuit began Tuesday, police homicide detectives already were en route to search Laurent’s home in Vacherie in St. James Parish.
McDonald’s partially clothed body was found about 10 p.m. Monday in her bed in a room at a Comfort Suites Airport motel in the 2700 block of Idaho Avenue in Kenner, Caraway said. “
The woman, who was arrested last year on a count of soliciting prostitution in Reno, Nev., had ligature marks on her neck and wrists, the chief said.
Also on Tuesday, prior to the chase, State Police detectives working with the East Baton Rouge Violent Crimes Unit were monitoring Laurent, troopers said.
The detectives asked troopers to conduct a traffic stop on Laurent “as a public safety precaution” while he was driving a black 2005 Chevrolet Impala on La. 18, troopers said.
As the two troopers tried to make the stop shortly before 1 p.m., Laurent sped away.
During the pursuit that followed, one of the troopers got into a wreck with his patrol car, but escaped without serious injuries, Graham said.
The other trooper kept chasing Laurent, who stopped his car near the top of the bridge partially in the outside northbound lane and partially in the shoulder.
Graham said the pursuing trooper saw Laurent get out, run in front of his parked car and jump over the rail.
“That was the last time he was seen,” Graham said, adding that bridge traffic was able to get around the jumper’s parked car until it was removed.
The bridge links Gramercy on the east bank of St. James Parish and Wallace on the west bank of St. John the Baptist Parish.
Police Chief Caraway said police detectives would continue investigating McDonald’s motel-room slaying in Kenner and try to establish whether Laurent would be implicated in the case.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the other two homicides linked to Laurent, Trooper Graham said.
The Impala has been taken to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Crime Laboratory for processing. The Baton Rouge cases tied to Laurent also remain under investigation, troopers said.”

I feel somewhat obligated to say, throw her a$$ from the 8th floor, but not before hitting her in the head with an axe handle.  Does is solve anything? Nope, neither did throwing the baby from the 4th floor.  Is there a cost involved?  Yup, a good axe handle made of ash costs about $25 and up to about $40... then you have to pay the clean up crew afterwards, but it is far cheaper than the medical bills this poor baby is racking up.... and the baby did nothing wrong.

I'm going to throw up.  Seriously.  What the heck is wrong with people.

We just had a story here (I should post it).  Father stabbed a 10 month old baby.  His own child.  This was a nice middle class family living in a good area, not on drugs or anything and not known to police.  The father actually called 911 on himself.  Thank God that baby also lived.

These are these kids own parents...I just cannot even fathom any of this.  It makes me physically sick.

If she didn't want the baby, she was at the hospital, why not just leave him there?  The world is so cruel to those that need love and care, the most.  It's so sad.
