Colo. mom starts petition to arm teachers with Tasers

SEDALIA, Colo. –  In the wake of last week’s school shooting in Connecticut, one Colorado mom is hoping to encourage school districts to allow teachers to carry Tasers in an effort to protect students and themselves.

Jenni Parks, a mother of four, has started an online petition that would encourage lawmakers to require teachers to have stun guns in each classroom.

“We The People would like to Petition the State of Colorado to make Tasers a requirement for all teaching staff and that there be one secured fire arm available in case of emergency,” said Parks in her online campaign.

The idea, which will likely stun most people, is not one expected to be taken up by lawmakers anytime soon.

“I think the chance of a teacher accidentally discharging a Taser is much smaller than someone having to burying twenty children,” added Parks.

Denver Public Schools allowed media to observe their state of the art command center that allows officials to monitor surveillance cameras, radios, and all aspects of student safety.

Parents dropping off their children at school Monday morning told FOX31 Denver crews the shooting left their sense of safety shattered.

“I felt very scared, it took me about 45 minutes to leave the school this morning,” said one parent dropping off a child Monday morning.

We live in the burbs.  We actually have a policeman that is at our school daily.  Not all day but he is in our parking lot regularly.

I'd be afraid that since these shootings at schools is so rare that a security guard would become complacent and might be caught off guard AND if he is there every day, that the shooter would plan on it.  But I am all for anything that puts a dent in the problem and would keep my kids safer should a lunatic set their sights on the school my boys attend.

Armed guards/police presence at schools... I think that's an AWESOME idea.

Funny this suggestion has made its way forward. My boys, over the weekend, asked me why there wasn't a policeman at the school in CT. They said that if there'd been a policeman there, that it wouldn't have happened.

Honestly, and I'm trying to think like a 5-9 year old here... if I saw a policeman/woman/officer-of-the-law standing guard outside my school, I'd feel SAFE and SNUG and SECURE. Little kids respect the police and think that police are there to "protect" us from harm and put the "bad guys" in jail.

Yup... a police officer at EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL is a step in the right direction. Hell, WE pay for schools AND our public-servants (ie: police), so freaking work it into the budgets.

It won't solve the problem completely, but as SM keeps saying... "If it stops just ONE incident, then it's time & money well spent".

(hoping that he is not high if marijauna is legal in that state and hence missing the armed man that walks up the side walk and shoots him)

LOL, good one, most jobs have drug policies in place that doesn't allow the use of MJ legal or not, medical or not, including mine and I would hope for the same policy for armed guards at our schools.

Education in the US.  Well, it is my understanding that funding has been cut to all states and by a huge amount.  Most states are trying to play catch up just with that.  There is also something new that the country is working on "the core curriculem" which schools must meet and it costs money to get all up to speed.

I guess I could get used to an armed guard at schools (hoping that he is not high if marijauna is legal in that state and hence missing the armed man that walks up the side walk and shoots him).  I think it would be a little freaky for kids to see an armed man/woman at their school---  kind of how I feel when I've seen military personel at airports with guns.

I don't ever want to hear about another kid being killed... I don't want anyone being killed.  Fact is, violent crime is on the down swing so people are getting the dent they asked for.

As for MJ and this particular matter.... sounds good to me.  There are a lot of places that tax money could be used and there are an awful lot of trained professionals right now out of work that would love to protect little kids.

Thanks Brice just the opportunity I was looking for to bring up the legalization of MJ and putting the tax dollars generated towards better, safer education, as they want to do in CO, with the first 40 million generated going towards just that, here in CO anyway.

Believe it or not, I'm kinda on the fence as far as political parties but if I leaned any more to the right I would fall off. I also think that the proposed ban on assault weapons is like trying to break a solid steel ball with a rubber mallet it is just not going to work, gun control is not the answer IMO

They can't budget for teachers.  They can't budget anything in regards to education.  I guess they could do what the government normally does and steal the money from social security and pay someone to stand guard.

"Protect our kids by getting rid of these weapons of mass destruction !"

Do I hear a hint of Bush in your voice ? :-0

Ok enough jokes, I don't think the taser's are a good idea, I do however think a trained security guard on site is, I mean this is our children surely there is a way to budget this in

NO, tasers have proven to cause great harm and even death when used by cops ! And they're supposed to be trained in how to use them.
This is a horrible, horrible idea.

I agree with Teko, no more weapons.
Protect our kids by getting rid of these weapons of mass destruction !

I'm actually in agreement with Teko and feel the same emotion about it at this point.

Well we can always put bars on the windows of the school and make them prisoners in their own environment. (Oh wait, they already are like fish in a fishbowl) so that might make us feel better. Or, why dont we just send the kids to school packing heat!  This infuriates me like I cannot even describe. Never before have we had to have these conversations in our country. So why now? What is different now? How many freedoms do we lose before we say enuff is enuff. Lose the assault weapons, quit making ammo for em, make it easy to get healthcare for the mentally ill or disturbed, enforce the laws on the books and start holding people accountable for their actions. This IS America! Kids are dying in the schools, being sexually molested by adults, abused by adults. Geeze, I think its time to open our eyes and do something about all of this mess instead of bringing out more weapons to fight other weapons.

I know, very true Brice.  I was saddened to learn that the CT. shooter shot out the window to get in.  Our school has a lock system----  but I have no idea if the glass is bullet proof.

No chance they are going to pay for security guards at schools.  They can't even afford the teachers, for hells sake.

I once found pepper spray in a trunk I had bought at a thrift store. It didn't say "pepper spray". It was big and it had a bear on it. I was trying to figure out what it was and started pressing stuff. Squirt! OMG! Thank G-d it didn't touch me but I started tearing and gagging and had to leave the apt. for over an hour just to breathe.

Note to self: do not press buttons on items you are unfamiliar with.

Agreed rivll.  Yeah, it wouldn't save everyone or work in some situations but if there is a chance that it might, I'd just have no problem with it being available.  Like I said, I'm a fan of pepper spray too.

When you are dealing with a lune who wants to kill you, ANY sense of security is a bit comforting even if it is false.

I know. See, we are not really so different when it comes down to the real stuff.
I picture el. who can be so outrageous at times, sitting with the kids he was describing with his heart so full, trying to reassure them.
We are not so different. :)

"Think a taser is a false sense of security. You don't bring a taser to a gun fight. A fire arm in school is a very different issue.

True the staff in a school facing someone with an automatic weapon wouldn't be helped by a taser. However, there are many situations of violence where the bad guy does get close enough to zap him. I wouldn't mind that as back up, not as a sole solution.

As 12/21/2012 gets closer don't you think it's odd that the more liberal people on here and myself seem to be in more agreement over certain things?

End of days???? LOL

I can go with that. I wanted to get a taser for myself and for my daughter but they are illegal here. So instead I take my big dogs around with me (no one knows by looking what sweethearts they really are though they would undoubtedly protect me if necessary.)

Well, I think it would be hard for a teacher to get close enough to use the taser on a person holding a gun shooting but it is 'something'.

Less scary to me to have in a school than a gun and the issue with a gun at school is that some would have a hard time pulling the trigger.  Adrenline would have to be pumping and someone might freeze.

I think pepper spray is pretty effective.  I'd have no problem spraying that.  Hard to get right up and do it to someone though if they have a gun and are shooting.

Ugh.  Luckily school shootings like this are rare so far.

Think a taser is a false sense of security. You don't bring a taser to a gun fight.

A fire arm in school is a very different issue and I think you either employee a off duty police office, highly trained security guard or maybe even an ex-military memeber i think a fire arm in the school is very tough to agree with.

So you get a teacher who goes through the qualifications and what not. Something happenes and he needs the gun. How much precaution is he/she going to take when firing the gun? Someone who does/did it for a living knows the stress that you can be under in having to take a life or when to even fire so no one else is hurt.

I've got no problem with tasers.  Someone will when their "little darling" gets tasered.  And then there will eventually be a death and the argument will be somewhere around, "this could have all been avoided if tasers were not introduced into our schools."

Having had the opportunity to "ride the lightning" (being tasered) I think it is a very effective tool and all law enforcement should be required to carry them.  I offered my body up to science on this opportunity.... not so sure I will do it again.  Its effective.
