I didn't try to verify your stats, but I do believe they are probably pretty accurate.  We have similar issues in our aboriginal community here in Calgary.  I know that much of it stems from a long history of marginalization (this is not me making excuses, this is just simply the facts).  The problem truly lies (at least in my opinion) that based on these statistics, many of us continue to then generalize.  We all need to make more of an effort to move away from that and start looking at individuals as just that...individuals.  Sometimes I worry that this statistical information is used to justify attitudes.  I understand why these attitudes exist.  What i am interested in is not falling into them, and again, taking individuals as individuals, and trying our best to assume the best in people instead of the worst.

Issues facing the black community that have nothing to do with racism:
94% of black murder victims are killed by blacks. Read the piece by Walter Williams on this.
Fatherless homes, 50% urban dropout rate, 50% prisoners are black, 14% unemployment rate.

As for racism...well, there really isn't much question it is still alive and well.  It makes me happy to know we have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go.  I think there are far less out and out haters, and today more suspicion or racial profiling then actual hatred (although that certainly hasn't disappeared).  I don't think most people want to feel suspicious or fearful, but age old sterotypes are hard to change. With each generation it gets better.  I think of how far we have come...from slavery to segregation to today.  It's all about education and regular every day human beings getting to know each other as individuals.  Ok, back to my happy little place I go!!

So racism is why out of wedlock birth rate is 70%? Or that the graduation rate is low? No it is not. So when you have low graduation rates you can't find good jobs and resort to crime. Or you don't have a family so you find family on the street.

To use the excuse of racism for everything that is affecting the black community does a disservice to them, it's insulting. Look at the most successful black men and women in America and what do you see they have in common...most have a solid family structure a strong work ethic and values.

Read Larry Elder, Allen West, Kevin Jackson and others all black men who have succeed in life. Listen to Juan Williams talk about what plagues the black community.
I'm not an expert but I listen to those who have over come and succeeded in life. They don't make excuses, they hit the problems head on and get belittled by the NAACP and others because they are tired of the excuses.

How could I have ever believed that racism plays a role in the circumstances of African Americans or other minorities?  Discrimination is something made up by black people, I'm sure.  OR CNN.  Or one of those other nasty liberals that want to trick all those white people into examining what we do as a society.

About 40% of white women give birth out of wedlock, about 70% of black women give birth out of wedlock. No family structure, no men to learn from. Less black men graduate from high school...is that racism no it;s not.

I will agree with one thing though.  The racial profiling in GZ case was not my only objection . . .  he did the wrong thing by following a kid when told not to.  He thought too highly of himself because when he confronted OR Martin confronted the following situation, he had to shoot someone.  What a mess he made of the neighborhood watch concept.

Racism exists in everyone Vance.  The louder you fight that, the more work I think you have to do within to understand what racism is and how it affects so much.  We've improved as a nation but denial will get us nowhere.
