How long should you have pain after having a tooth removed on top side

I am wondering if I had a tooth on the top left middle of mouth pulled on friday how long should I have pain?? And how do you know if it is healing or dry socket

you will have discomfort for several days. if after 3 days it doesnt feel much better call your dentist. of course you will have some post op pain. you have an open gaping hole so some pain is to be expected.

Done properly you should not have any pain during and post operatively if you follow your post op instruction everythhing should be controled just fine.
As far as dry socket, you are a  candidate if 1- you are a a smoker and smoke in the first 24 hours  2- if you have a really unclean mouth, in which case I would suggest a cleaning before your xtraction and perhaps pre-med with antibiotics.
