Are Dental Implants painful AFTER the freezing comes out?

HI,

I am VERY nervous about getting my dental implant done since I can only take Advil as a pain medication. I have bad reactions to almost everything else so Advil will be the only thing I can take. I had to have my front tooth pulled three weeks ago and I am due to have the implant next week. I have read so many horror stories that I'm about ready to back out. I have a fairly high pain tolerance but I don't want to be in excruciating pain after the freezing comes out. Can anyone tell me how bad the pain is? I would appreciate it.

Thanks
Sandy

Hi everyone,
Well, I had the implant done last Wednesday. I guess a few things stand out for me. First of all the dentist and several other people ( no one here) led me to believe that the actual procedure ( dentist hands in my mouth) would only take 10 minutes or so. NOT TRUE. I was in the chair for over half an hour. He did have to do grafting and he said that my gum had actually started to heal and had wrapped itself inside the bone a bit? Anyway it did take a lot longer than ten minutes. I also heard him tell the assistant that he had to use membrane? Have no idea what that was about. When the freezing came out it really was quite bad pain. Throbbing aching pain especially in one of my front teeth. Advil did dull it but by no means did it elevate completely.  I have to be honest, it was bordering on intolerable a few times during the night. I was taking Advil every 4 hours the first two days.

Day by day it has definitely been better. I haven't taken anything for pain since Saturday. Just under my nose and along the top of my gumline is VERY tender to touch. When I smile it is painful in that area.Still a bit swollen there as well. It has only been five days so I really can't expect much more at this point. The dentist said that after all the cutting and drilling I should expect some discomfort for maybe a week or two. That's where I'm at now. Discomfort, but not constant pain anymore.

Thank you all again for the helpful advice. I probably would have backed out if not for your words of encouragement.

Hello Sandy,
Having the implant was a piece of cake.

It is the problems that many of us are experiencing after the implant was put in.
Ringing in ears, horribly sore joint pain, etc.   Please first make sure you are not
allergic to titanium or nickel.  Find out what they are using to make your implant...

Please read the posts under titanium allergy.

Doctors will try and tell you that you will have no reaction, and many people have none.
But now more and more dentists are finding out that people can and do react to the implants.

Again, it is a very easy, procedure to put one in.  You will do just fine.
BUT please do your research first because for the rest of us, to get it taken out
now is not an easy thing to do.

When you do have it put in and IF you find yourself reacting to it, or your body starting
to feel imflammation, have them take the tooth out.  It is a simple procedure in the first 6 weeks.

Good luck, keep us all posted.  SMILE!!

Thanks very much, I do feel better having read your comments. One more question though, were you guys put under or were you awake, but frozen through the procedure? I'll be awake and someone else wrote that when they drill the screw in your bone it's horrible? My dentist assured me I won't feel any discomfort and that the actual procedure,,,"hands in my mouth" will only take about 15 minutes?  That made me feel better too.

Thanks again!

I also had only a  little pain after my implant placement. Ice on the outside of the face helps, as well as drinking something (NO STRAW) frosty, like a chillata.

You're going to be just fine, Sandy! Let us know how it goes.

I had my front top four removed and implants placed right away.  Pain was really minimal.  All I took was ibuprofen (Advil) and it worked fine.  Be sure to use ice afterwards and sleep sitting up a bit to help minimize swelling.   No smoking or drinking through a straw.

The worst pain for me was the initial novocaine.  After that, except for swelling, I wouldn't have known I had anything done.

Best to you and good luck!  May your pain be a little as mine was!
