Dettol burn

Over a couple a months ago I saw a red mark appear on my nose. Over the following few days, it didn't go away and bacame painful, so I guessed it was a type of infection. My diet was poor at the time and I was stressed.

So, stupidly, I over compressed it, picked at it with a needle and left Dettol overnight on it. The next day there was a brown mark which later turned to a scab. The dermatologist recommended perderm for 8 days only.

During the last two months there has been a discoloration of the skin from brown to light brown. It is now more red than light brown and I have been trying to keep out of the sun.

I had been thinking this might be a form of postinflammtory hyperpigmentation. However, looking at this area with an extremely powerful spotlight, I noticed that the very thin top layer of white skin over this circular area hasn't really grown and I would have expected this to happen, unless it is normal that this takes a long time. This was the area of the scab which eventually came off. I am also wondering if any dettol is still trapped in the deeper parts of the skin.

I have recently started putting a high concentration of aloe vera, but am unsure what is the best treatment for this.

Hello,
You are right because it sounds like post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Without treatment, this usually takes about 6 months to resolve and for the skin color to go back to its normal color.  Topical treatments with acids and chemical peels can be effective but can take a while for the skin to totally revert to its normal color.  Microdermabrasion can also be done, but this might require several sessions.  Skin resurfacing using lasers is also an option.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.

Thanks a lot for the feedback! I'll investigate your suggestions. This was some time ago I almost forgot about it... Dettol is lethal...

I now wash only with water and very occasionally use a muslin face cloth. I was looking at a solution from the inside and tried aloe vera juice and a few other things. I guess my theory is that the skin repairs itself from the inside and I have seen new skin grow in that area year after year so the skin seems to have some sort of understanding of where it should grow.

I guess supplementing with vitamins once or twice a week would help as well as possibly some Omega or CoQ10. Diet can't be discounted at all and I was told to avoid fatty foods such as cheese and chocolate.

Actually I have a few skin tags now so this may have been a consequence of too many supplements at one point? I guess a nutritional expert would know more about this than me and maybe the nutritional aspect of healing shouldn't be ignored as well.

Thanks - I will look into these.

Dermol is probably the best product I have used. My skin problems started after I stopped using it, so I recommend it highly.

Hello,
Dermol 500 contains four main ingredients: liquid paraffin, isopropyl myristate, benzalkonium chloride and chlorhexidine hydrochloride. Liquid paraffin and isopropyl myristate have moisturising properties and Benzalkonium chloride and chlorhexidine hydrochloride have antiseptic properties that help to destroy bacteria on the surface of the skin.

You can use a mild moisturizer which is non allergic, non perfumed and light like Aveeno lotion or Cetaphil moisturizing lotion.

I hope it helps. Take care and regards.

Thanks. I thought it might be this. In a different light, it actually looked like bruising/burnt skin in a circular area as well. It is very strange how skin looks different under artificial light.

Maybe there is also an element of chemical burn from the Dettol. I have now learnt that neat Dettol on skin is a no-no and will probably give compressing a miss as well.

I have restarted using Dermol 500 as a skin wash, but can't really stand creams on my face, so this is a problem in relation to sunblock. Are there any light ones that you can recommend that don't block the pores and therefore heat up the skin?
