Lump after mole removal

Hello, I had a small flat black mole on my breast removed for fear of cancer by a dermatologist. He removed it by cutting it out which left a big hole for some time. It has been almost 8 months after and I feel it has never healed correctly. It is red and irritated looking and has a lump beneath the surface. It often itches and is sometimes even painful. Do you have any information you can give me regarding this? Is this normal? I almost feel like I need to have the lump taken out and have stitches in to have it properly heal. Help please!

Hi Lisa

I had a mole removed on my leg 3 weeks ago. Unfortunately I got a really nasty infection in the wound and got strong antibiotics. Now I'm finishing a second course of antibiotics and the wound is still not looking very good. What worries me more is that I have a large lump under the scar. I've seen my doctor today and he said that if the lump doesn't go within a month I'll need another operation to remove it. He said that if the lump stays there the infection will keep coming back. So I suggest you go see somebody very soon  because it probably needs to come out.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi,

I suggest that you seek a follow up consultation with your physician. After 8 months , scar tissue is expected but there should be no notable discoloration, any redness, bleeding , discharge or itchiness. Although itchiness may be noted as the wound starts to heal.

This requires prompt evaluation.Avoid unnecessarily touching the area or applying anything on the involved area until this has bee assessed by your physician.

Your doctors and nurses will do everything that they can to prevent your wound from becoming infected during surgery, but it is important that you know how to tell if you are developing an infection after you go home. If a wound becomes infected, it may:
become more painful
look red, inflamed or swollen
leak or weep liquid, pus or blood
smell unpleasant
Contact your doctor if you have any of the above symptoms. Wound infections can be treated successfully if they are diagnosed early
