Scalp itches HORRIBLY

For as far back as I can remember I've had horrible dandruff. In 2nd grade, I was so embarrassed because during a regular lice check at school, the school nurse made a nasty comment about my "cakes of dandruff."  And coinciding with this dandruff is a horrible, almost unbearable itch.  All day, but especially at night, my scalp, starting from my crown all the way to the bottom of my hairline and along my hairline on my forehead, itches so bad that I accidentally scratch until it bleeds and believe me, it's so painful you'd think I'd learn, but it seriously itches that bad.  For what seems like my whole life I've been trying various dandruff shampoos but none of them have given me any relief to flakes or itch.  Does it sound like general dandruff, or something more serious like excema or psoriasis?  Is it something worth going to a dermatologist for?

Okay thanks! I'm the only one that I know of in my family that experiences this. It just seems like every time I go to the doctor for anything, not just my scalp, they act like I'm overreacting because I'm only 16 or blames everything on my weight because im 180 at 5'6", so I guess that's why I've been avoiding it.  But I guess I'll give a dermatologist a shot.  Thanks!

For what it is worth...here is what I think.

First..you must see a dermatologist.  Those dandruff shampoos are the worst thing you can try and will most definitely not stop the sort of itching you describe.

A lot of things can be causing the intense itch.  After much experimenting...i use Clobex...prescribed by my derm.  I don't have dandruff...never have...i do have outbreaks of psorisis (spelling?)..but what causes the itch is unimportant to me...stopping it is.  BTW: it may be a genetic thing...my sister is just now having same problem...believe her doc said it was folliculitis or some such?

Best luck...I know how awful it is to have problem.
