Question about a healthy, but high-carb diet

Hi everyone.  Here's my situation:  I work at the container docks in New Jersey, doing a physically demanding job called lashing.  Suffice is to say that the work requires intense lifting, a good deal of climbing, and some very long hours (the hours vary greatly but generally I work two 22-hour shifts a week).  So I tend to eat alot of food, usually not very healthy food, to keep my energy up during the course of the day.  As a result, while I have alot of muscle in my back, arms and chest, I also have a large amount of fat around my midsection (a 'spare tire').

I've taken to running on a treadmill on my days off and eating a lower calorie diet when I'm at home.  The problem is when I'm at work; I need suggestions on foods I can eat while I'm there that will give me enough energy to work but isn't all greasy and nasty.  Is anyone in a similiar situation who can recommend some good foods that will fit the bill?

Thanks everyone!

Gotta give that a try (both trail mix and healthy cooking).  Thanks.

Actually, I'm looking for a good recipe.  We should see if there is one on the Healthy Cooking Forum!

I buy it in big bags and break it into *small* ones so I'm not tempted to over-do.  That way if I get asked to go on an unexpected trip, I have some "energy" with me.  It works for me.

Come now - stop knocking yourself.  We aren't smarter - we just got up earlier than you did.

Hey, I like the idea of trail mix.  Do you have a good recipe that doesn't have a lot of salt?  I also find that nuts are a pretty good pick me up.

Why do the smart ones have to answer first!

Do you like trail-mix?  I find these a good pick-me-up.

Welcome.  Trudie said it very well.  Protein and fiber will stick with you longer, so you will have plenty of energy to do your work without the simple carbs and "bad for you" fats.  But remember you do need some fats - like that found in olive oil, avocadoes, nuts, etc.  That will also help to keep you feeling fuller and more satisfied.

Try fruits and veggies for snacks, along with low fat cheeses, etc.  Whole fruits are better than juices because you will also get the fiber they contain, which will help fill you up.

Good luck.  Hope to see you around.

Hi there!  Welcome to the forum!

Complex carbs (whole wheat, oats, grains, brown rice, beans, legumes) and some protein will do a lot to help.  Try making a lower fat but full of beans and some ground meat chili and taking it in a thermos.  Or soups made with beans or lentils.  Be creative with sandwiches - find a bakery with some good whole wheat or multi-grain bread and add a variety of things - meat, lettuce, avocado, hummus, roasted peppers, lower fat cheeses, etc.  Dairy products can help reduce stomach fat.  Add a good probiotic yogurt (like Activia but not the low fat one) and maybe some fruit smoothies made with low fat milk.

Good luck!
