Food going up nasal cavity

The other week I was eating some cake and somehow some of it went up my nose.  I eventually got it down after snorting and blowing my nose.  I didnt think too much of it until this week when the same thing happened again except I couldnt get the food down.   The problem is now whenever I eat all my food keeps getting caught in my nasal cavity.  My left nostril feels rather weird where it joins the bak of my throught, it feels like there is   some sort of gap which wont close.  Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening or what can be causing it?  It's quite distressing and making it very awkward to eat solids.

Thanks

I AM FREAKING OUT ALL NIGHT AND DAY! Am I going to get infected? will it work its way out? Damn this ***** I am totally wigging out and there are so many responses to this I don't know what to think!!

I have the same thing!!  It drives me NUTS!!  I had my tonsils out later in life (around 27), and I constantly have food stuck up in my nasopharynx.  At first it was water going up my nose every time I took a drink of water.  I was told that was normal right after surgery and it will go away.  It did, for the most part.      Now 18 years later my theory is this:   Either my surgeon was terrible and took away too much of whatever tissue I was going to need to be able to swallow properly, or something is shrinking, or I don't know what.   I'd actually be willing to bet that there are more incidences of choking on food in people with their tonsils removed later in life than people who still have their tonsils.  Haven't checked if there are any studies on that.  Now, I am not sure which is better- having tonsils so big and cryptic that they constantly have food particles stuck in them, or having all kinds of food go up my nose via my nasopharynx.  I am always afraid I am going to inhale the darn piece of food when I try to get it out- or when it comes down (always at the most in-opportune times, usually while I'm driving with no tissues in the car).   When I am 80 this is NOT going to be pretty.    I fully believe that if something else doesn't kill me first, my (lack of ) tonsils will.    I am seriously considering a liquid diet.

I believe that is 1 of the reasons causing this condition.  But it can happen to those which don't have nasal regurgitation simply by coughing when there is still some food in their throat.  A powerful cough can force food particles into the nasal cavity.

I know this topic is 7 YEARS old but it was one of the first to pop up when I finally googled this problem I've been dealing with for as long as I remember. Kind of depressing there seems to be know real solution but at least I know I'm not alone. It bothers me that doctors just pretend it's not a real issue but from previous experiences with doctors and their egos I guess I'm not really surprised...

There's always been one nostril I can barely breathe through and my mouth is constantly dry...and it's just awful having to constantly excuse myself to snort or cough up mucus trying to get these bits of vile-smelling decaying food out of my sinuses...all those noises are not really 'lady-like' to say the least and I'm basically always living in fear that my co-workers are going to hear me. It drives me CRAZY feeling it back there though (got a bit of rice and ground hamburger from last night's supper irritating me as I type this...I can feel it sort of sloooowly trying to slide back down into my throat so hopefully I'll get it out soon but I always worry about it slipping down my windpipe when that happens, which is even more unpleasant...)

And since I'm diabetic as well and I'm really concerned I'm going to wind up with a REALLY nasty infection one day but I don't know what to do about it. :(
