My sons sudden wondering eye

My 6 year old boy's left eye/pupil seemed off center starting this past thursday.
It has not straightened since. He's been squinting for a few months on and off. The optometrist checked him 2wks ago and vision was 20/20 with 1 eye maybe 20/25. Since thusday he's been squinting nonstop up close and far away. In good health otherwise. I have an appt next wk with opthomologist but wondering I there are any insights on why this sudden drift inward of his left eye. Help pls. Worried mom. Thanks

The opthamologist diagnosed him with congenital esotropia and mild amblyopia in left eye which is 20/25. We started the patch on his right eye for 2 hrs per day. My question is how successful is this and are there other avenues to correct or ensure amblyopia doesn't get worse.  I know surgery is an option but don't know the side effects. What challenges will he have in the future?

Far more likely a strabismus (squint) than brain tumor, much more likely.
