flashes in eyes

I am having bright flashes of light at night.  If I move my head from side to side the lights pass across my eyes vigorously.

Is it also abnormal if you have flashes (flashing circles in my case, like Lifesavers) when moving just your EYES (not your head) back and forth after turning out the light? (Age 51) This happens just in my left eye.

Eye exams have been normal although I never mentioned this "flashing" to the ophthalmologist.
