I forgot to say that in your wife's case, I recommend that she is checked by a retinologist. an ophthalmologist who specializes in treatment/surgery of retina disorders.
Ask the doctor if there are any tears in her retina. Lattice also needs to be WATCHED when when the person has PVD, a natural aging process that is not risky for the normal eye, but can be risky to eyes with lattice. The patient should be closely watched.
If the patient has had a detached retina in the other eye, he is also watched more closely. If blood is present in the vitreous or retina, special tests are required, and the patient is closely watched under certain circumstances.
All these things should be watched closely and tested for, but if there is not risky tear in the retina or other serious damage, lasering is not usually recommended.
Ask your doctor what specific condition, other than simply lattice, requires lasering, and then get a second opinion from an Eye MD, or ophthalmologist. Find one at www.aao.org.
I am not a doctor, but a long-term eye patient with serious risks to my eyes. Dr. Hagan will review my remarks.
There is no medical treatment for lattice. The cause of lattice is unknown. It affects perhaps 4-10% of the population (I have lattice). Most lattice does NOT need treatment. If you are not comfortable get a second opinion.
