My 16 yr old son has had rectal bleeding (varying degrees) with every bowel mov't for the past 4 months. Three days ago, he underwent an upper/lower GI scope and no source of the bleeding could be detected and, per the doctors, everything looked normal. The next course of action is an ultrasound of his liver and gall bladder, as well as the "pill cam" (to determine if the possible source of the bleeding is in the small intestine). During the course of blood work, it has been discovered that he has elevated liver enzymes. In March, the levels were 100-200 range; 11 days ago the level was determined to be in the 300 range. Additional blood draws were done 3 days ago to check for possible viral/autoimmune issues, etc.; however, the results won't be back until sometime next week. (The doctor also said that it is a future liver biopsy is "likely". ) My son is reporting no pain and his energy level is normal. He doesn't drink or use drugs, other than occasional use of ibuprofen for muscle aches related to sports. I am trying very hard to keep my concern/anxiety contained; however......
Has anyone ever experienced a similar situation and had it determined what the issue was?
