GERD and Alkaline Diet Anyone tried it?

Can't believe GERD not in 'topic' choices!

Was just wondering if anyone with ulcers/reflux/oesophageal/stomach acid problems had tried an alkaline diet and whether it helped? How long 'til a difference can be seen?

Thanks in advance x

hi, lemon and watermelon have the highest concentration of alkaline, which is very good for people who wish to be disease free, unfortunately for gerd sufferers lemon is the worst possible food to have, i hope that answers your question, cheers.

I have not heard of "GERD," but I think I may be getting some kind of ulcer or at least something like it. A while ago, I got really mad (really), and my stomach started hurting (which is strange, because I've had a good stomach all my life). Then, incidentally, I decided to have three glasses of wine (or at least I think I decided). The next day, my stomach felt awful. One of the worst pains in my life.

It's been better since then, but it occasionally hurts. However, I find that when I eat foods such as dairy products or products with sugar (I don't eat meat) or fat, the pain comes back a little. There is very little pain (or none), however, when I eat things like lettuce and dates. I wish I had a biochemical background, but I don't, so I don't really know if those foods are alkaline or if they produce a base when digested.

Incidentally, all the foods that I hear are alkaline (or close to it, let's say) are the foods of which you often hear you don't eat enough, like vegetables and whole grains. Maybe the point is that, even if this alkaline diet thing is deemed controversial, eating those foods is good for you anyway. And maybe the point is also that eating things that are acidic will cause pain if you have some kind of ulcer, whether doing so will totally ruin the rest of your body.

In either case, the message, for me, is loud and clear: eating alkaline foods at least feels better for me, so I will do so. (I'm obviously not going to exclude some of the nutrients I know I need. All I'm saying is that, seeing how people who eat vegetables tend to be healthy, I will try to balance my diet more in favor of these vegetables.)
